Netflix Has 80+ Games In Development, Plans To Release One Per Month

As a long-time gamer and avid Netflix subscriber, I’m thrilled to hear about the streaming giant’s ambitious plans in the gaming industry. Having grown up playing games on various platforms and witnessing the evolution of the gaming world, I can’t help but be intrigued by Netflix’s entry into this market.

Netflix revealed its ambitious plan for video games during its recent financial update. Currently, they’re working on over 80 different games, intending to launch a minimum of one fresh title every month.

Greg Peters, co-CEO and president of Netflix, explained their entry into the gaming industry from my perspective as a player. According to him, the global gaming market, without considering Russia and China, generates around $150 billion in revenue each year – an amount that doesn’t even include ad revenues. However, Peters emphasized that Netflix games are unique because they don’t contain microtransactions or advertisements, which can disrupt the gaming experience for players like us. Nevertheless, he hinted at the potential inclusion of ad-based games in Netflix’s future plans without making a definitive commitment.

I’ve been enjoying playing games on Netflix for about three years now. And let me tell you, I’m really satisfied with how things have gone so far. We’ve set some ambitious goals for player engagement, and not only have we met those targets, but we’ve surpassed them in numerous ways.

According to Peters, the influence of Netflix Games on Netflix’s entire business can be described as minimal at present. Additionally, he noted that the amount Netflix spends on games compared to its overall content budget is likewise minimal. Last year, only about 1% of Netflix users were reported to have played a game on their platform. However, Peters mentioned that this was part of the deliberate plan to start off gradually. He anticipates growth in the gaming sector for Netflix in the future.

“Our investments have been adjusted to match the business impact’s expansion. We’re being cautious as we expand this engagement. The goal now is to increase its influence on the business to a significant level. You may recall our previous efforts in areas like unscripted content or film, or fine-tuning our offerings for specific markets such as Japan and India. Through the dedication of our teams, we’re making great strides in these areas.”

As a passionate gamer who enjoys exploring new titles on Netflix, I’ve noticed that they have already added over a hundred games to their platform. Being part of this gaming community, I can tell you that the company is continuously learning from our experiences with these games. They’re figuring out what resonates with us and what might not be so popular, enabling them to enhance our overall gaming experience.

As a gamer, I’m constantly striving to enhance our game development process. With over 80 projects underway, I focus on improving what truly resonates with players.

The executive continued by explaining that Netflix users strongly engage with “interactive storyline games.” Not only do these games provide an enjoyable experience for viewers, but they are also advantageous for business due to their easier production process. These games can be found within the Netflix Store section, and popular titles include those based on Virgin River and Perfect Match series.

Beginning in July of this year, we will introduce approximately one new title each month into Netflix Stories. Some of these titles will be impressive intellectual properties, such as Emily in Paris and Selling Sunset. Furthermore, there are many more unique titles in store for you in the upcoming quarters and years. (He added.)

Ted Sarandos, co-CEO of Netflix, expressed excitement about the company’s foray into games as they offer an unusual chance to let fans of a Netflix production interact more with their favorite content during breaks between seasons. He hinted that in the future, a Netflix game could potentially feature characters and plotlines that might influence upcoming seasons or movie spin-offs.

“It’s exciting and unique for us to provide dedicated gaming experiences to devoted fans, bridging the gap between seasons and potentially introducing new elements that may influence future storylines or spin-offs,” he expressed.

I’m thrilled to share some exciting news as a dedicated fan! This year, Netflix has announced plans for a multiplayer version of Squid Game, the hugely successful series, to be released alongside Season 2. Additionally, former Halo and Destiny mastermind Joseph Staten is now collaborating with Netflix on an AAA game that will be playable across multiple platforms. Can’t wait to dive into these new experiences!

One notable addition to Netflix Games’ collection towards the end of 2023 was Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, a high-profile release in our gaming library.
