Flintlock The Siege of Dawn Has Ultrawide and FOV Problem

As a seasoned gamer with a vast collection of games and an ultrawide monitor, I’ve grown accustomed to immersing myself in expansive vistas and intricately designed environments. However, not every game caters to this preference, and Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is one such title. Despite its unique charm and engaging gameplay, the lack of proper ultrawide support can hinder the experience for those of us who have invested in these monitors.

In today’s gaming landscape, Microsoft’s Game Pass subscription offers a second life to overlooked games. These titles, though worthy of attention yet risky to purchase due to their flaws, can be experimented with at no extra cost if you’re already a GP subscriber. An illustrative instance is Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn, which exists in an ambiguous state. While it’s not a poor game per se, it does fall short in certain areas like proper ultrawide support, among others. Let’s investigate if any enhancements can be made to enhance the experience for players using wide monitors.

Ultrawide Support, Camera and Field of View (FOV) Problems

An ultrawide display isn’t widely used, but it certainly enhances the viewing experience for those who have invested in it. Not every game supports this feature fully, such as Flintlock, but dedicated fans find ways to maximize its use. While not all games offer this capability, enthusiasts are resourceful and find workarounds.

In one Steam Community Hub thread about the game on monitor screens with ultrawide resolutions, users have reported an issue. The camera in these cases is excessively close to the protagonist, making for an uncomfortable playing experience. This problem seems connected to the Field of View (FOV) setting. Currently, Flintlock only supports a maximum FOV value of 105, which may not be enough. However, there’s a potential workaround.

Community Solution

In this project, we’re working with an older version of Unreal Engine, which is familiar to numerous users. As a result, you can modify the game’s configuration files with personalized settings. To try editing a file: 1) Make sure to create a backup first, 2) Save a copy of the original file before making any changes.

How to Improve Ultrawide Experience

  1. Make a copy of the configuration file located in:

C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Saltpeter\Saved\Config\WinGDK\GameUserSettings.ini

(Access quickly by pressing Windows+R and typing %localappdata%)

  1. Open GameUserSettings.ini with Notepad.
  2. Find the “FieldOfView=” line and increase the value. Start with 120 and adjust as needed.
  3. Save the file before closing.

Caution: Setting the FOV too high may cause a fisheye effect, potentially worsening the experience.

As someone who has been following the gaming industry for years and has played a fair share of indie titles, I can say that Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn, being only the second project from A44 Games, is an impressive feat. While it may not be without its flaws, it lays a strong foundation for the studio’s future works. Their dedication to creating an immersive and engaging experience is evident in every aspect of this game, from the intricate world-building to the intuitive mechanics. And though I’ve encountered some bugs and rough edges during my playthrough, I believe that with each new project, A44 Games will continue to refine their craft and deliver even more captivating experiences to players like myself.
