Fans are still eagerly awaiting news about The Elder Scrolls 6, but details remain scarce. All we have is a very early teaser trailer from years ago – one that Bethesda might wish they hadn’t released so soon – and only a few bits of information have surfaced since then.
Todd Howard, the game director, recently shared that The Elder Scrolls 6 will feature significantly more trees than Skyrim. He also described the new game as a traditional Bethesda RPG, built on the foundation of what Bethesda Game Studios does best.
The Elder Scrolls 6 won’t be a ‘creative detour,’ unlike Starfield and Fallout 76
Howard recently discussed what players can anticipate from The Elder Scrolls 6 in an interview with Kinda Funny Games, especially considering the unique approaches the studio took with the open worlds of Starfield and Fallout 76.
He confidently explained that Starfield and Fallout 76 represented a slight departure from classic Bethesda games like Skyrim, Oblivion, and Fallout 3, especially regarding how players explore the world. He emphasized that with Elder Scrolls 6, they’re returning to the familiar, well-loved style of those earlier titles.
When he refers to ‘classic style,’ he means the way exploration felt in older BGS games. Players would naturally stumble upon interesting things while traveling, and those discoveries would pull them off their original path.
Unlike those games, Starfield’s space travel feels disjointed, and Fallout 76 is designed for a different type of player with its ongoing live service model. Therefore, Elder Scrolls 6 should feel familiar and inviting to longtime fans of classic Bethesda games.
The interview also offered some good news: most of the team who worked on Skyrim are now focused on developing The Elder Scrolls 6. This is despite a few important people, like Elder Scrolls lore expert Kurt Kuhlmann, having moved on to other projects in recent years.
During the same interview, Howard also shared that The Elder Scrolls 6 is being built on an updated version of the Creation Engine 3. This means players can likely anticipate improvements to graphics and gameplay compared to Starfield, which was the only game made with the previous Creation Engine 2.
Bethesda has confirmed that Elder Scrolls 6 is being built with advanced technology like photogrammetry and motion capture, aiming for a more realistic world and characters. These improvements likely support the game’s ambitious goals for both graphics and gameplay.
Don’t expect to see much more of The Elder Scrolls 6 from Bethesda for quite some time. While the game is still several years away, Todd Howard has said that most of Bethesda Game Studios and its partner teams are currently working on it, and they’ve recently achieved a significant internal goal.
We might see more of this eagerly awaited RPG at Xbox’s June event. However, it’s likely any new look will be closer to the game’s release, or even during the launch itself, as hinted at by Howard last year. There’s even a chance it could be unexpectedly released right after the showcase – a ‘shadow drop’.
