The Witcher 4 is CD Projekt RED’s Next Game Release

As a die-hard fan of The Witcher series, I couldn’t contain my excitement when I heard that CD Projekt RED (CDPR) was working on The Witcher 4! After being blown away by The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and the immersive world of Cyberpunk 2077, I have high hopes for this next installment.

According to reports, CD Projekt RED (CDPR) is developing The Witcher 4 as their next possible project following the achievements of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077. After basking in the successes of these two games, CDPR decided to continue the narratives for both franchises.

In early 2022, the development team unveiled a plan for their future projects, which included The Witcher 4 as one of them. Later in January 2024, CDPR confirmed that work on The Witcher 4, also known as Project Polaris, would commence that very year. And they kept their word – production started in March 2024.

By the close of April 2024, a total of 407 CDPR staff members were engaged in the project named Polaris. It’s evident that the majority of the team is dedicated to working on The Witcher 4’s development.

CDPR Declares The Witcher 4 Will Be in Full Production Soon

I was thrilled to hear CD Projekt Red’s Associate Game Director Pawel Sasko share insights about their ongoing projects during his interview with Flow Games. He gave us a peek into the development stages of each project, and while they’re all in their infancy, The Witcher 4 seems to be the front-runner for release among them.

Using a conversational tone: CDPR’s secret project, codenamed Polaris, is the most advanced among all their ongoing developments, according to Sasko. However, he cautioned fans not to anticipate any updates on Polaris in the imminent future, as over 400 employees are currently dedicated to its creation. As for The Witcher 4, Sasko hinted that it’s still under wraps and we may need to wait a while longer before hearing anything new about it. Fortunately, production on Polaris is set to kick off soon in full swing.

The Witcher 4 Will Be the Beginning of Another Trilogy

Following The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s finale, fans expressed uncertainty about the future of the franchise. CDPR announced that Geralt’s tale concludes in Wild Hunt, but they never indicated that meant the end of The Witcher franchise as a whole. Consequently, what many believe will be The Witcher 4 is actually the start of a fresh series.

As a gamer, I’m excited to hear that Pawel Sasko revealed in his interview with Flow Games that Polaris marks the beginning of a new Witcher trilogy. Although we don’t know who the main character will be yet, one thing is clear: it won’t be Geralt leading the story this time around.

Disappointing though it is, we’re nonetheless receiving a new Witcher title. The big query at hand: who will be our leading man? Two options exist in this situation. Either CDPR is creating a game centered around Ciri’s perspective from the novels, or they’re introducing an entirely original character outside of The Witcher series.

Regardless of the situation, fans are bound to be thrilled upon hearing that The Witcher series will return to the gaming world.

When Does The Witcher 4 Come Out?

At the point of this writing, The Witcher 4’s release date has not been announced by CDPR. Based on their past development and release patterns, it’s speculated that the game could come out around 2028 or 2029. However, considering their history, a more realistic expectation would be a later release.

Based on the length of time it took to create Cyberpunk 2077, a probable release date, considering its rocky launch in 2020, would be around 2031 or 2032. The game started development in 2012 but didn’t come out until 2020. However, the release was marred by numerous issues, making it one of the most contentious in gaming history. It wasn’t until 2022 that most of these problems were resolved.

With everything considered, the future of Cyberpunk 2077’s progress lies primarily in the hands of CD Projekt Red.
