‘Conclave’ Trailer: Ralph Fiennes Is a Cardinal at the Center of a Papal Conspiracy in Edward Berger’s New Thriller

As a seasoned cinephile with a deep appreciation for intricate political dramas and historical narratives, I am genuinely intrigued by the upcoming “Conclave.” The rich cast, headed by Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, and Isabella Rossellini, immediately piqued my interest. The fact that it’s based on Robert Harris’ novel adds an extra layer of anticipation.

The trailer is out for “Conclave,” a new thriller from Focus Features, featuring stellar performances by Stanley Tucci, Ralph Fiennes, and Isabella Rossellini.

Based on Robert Harris’s novel, I’m here to share that this film takes place in the Vatican City, home of the Catholic Church. Over just a few days, the narrative unfolds as we witness the shocking demise of the Pope and the ensuing struggle to elect his successor.

Cardinal Lawrence, portrayed by Fiennes, is responsible for overseeing an ancient ritual within the Vatican. According to the movie’s tagline, “When the Church’s elite convene in the Vatican and are sealed off from the outside world, Lawrence finds himself at the heart of a plot and uncovers a shocking truth that has the potential to fundamentally alter the Church.”

Tucci attempts to win the papacy as the forward-thinking Cardinal Bellini, but he encounters strong opposition from Cardinal Tremblay, portrayed by John Lithgow. Rossellini depicts Sister Agnes, whose influence on the papal election is significant.

In my movie review experience, these talented actors – Sergio Castellitto as Cardinal Tedesco, Lucian Msamati as Cardinal Adeyemi, Brian F. O’Byrne portraying O’Malley, and Carlos Diehz in an unspecified role – form a remarkable supporting ensemble.

In the trailer, Cardinal Lawrence expresses surprise and apprehension about assuming his role as leader of the Cardinals, stating “I never imagined I’d have to take on this responsibility.” The scene then unfolds as the Cardinals present their arguments. Cardinal Lawrence insists that it’s not a matter of conflict, but Bellini firmly counters, “This is indeed a war, and you must choose a side.”

Prepare for the excitement, the drive, and the revelations as Cardinal Lawrence faces a crucial choice.

I was thrilled to learn that Edward Berger, who took home the Oscar for Best International Feature in 2023 with “All Quiet on the Western Front,” is at the helm of this remarkable film. With a brilliant screenplay by Peter Straughan, known for his work on “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy,” we’re in for a treat. The talented Volker Bertelmann, who previously collaborated with Berger, is back to score the movie, promising an emotionally resonant soundtrack. Stéphane Fontaine, renowned for his work on “A Prophet,” masterfully handles the cinematography, while Suzie Davies of “Saltburn” brings her production design expertise to the project.

Limited release for “Conclave” by Focus Features starts on November 1, with a wider rollout scheduled for November 8. The movie is additionally anticipated to be showcased at autumn film festivals.
