As a movie lover with a deep appreciation for intriguing and lesser-known stories, I am thrilled to hear about Ellipsis Entertainment’s upcoming film based on the Nagarwala case. The fact that it’s being produced by Tanuj Garg and Atul Kasbekar, who have a proven track record of delivering compelling stories, adds to my excitement.
As a cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that Ellipsis Entertainment in India, known for their successful films like “Do Aur Do Pyaar” and “Sharmajee Ki Beti,” is gearing up to produce a new project based on a real-life scandal. This upcoming film will shed light on the infamous 1971 Nagarwala case that shook the Delhi branch of the State Bank of India, promising an intriguing exploration into the darker side of human nature and finance.
The Nagarwala case centers on alleged double agent Rustom Sohrab Nagarwala, who supposedly impersonated then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to convince the head cashier to withdraw INR6 million (then $800,000) from the bank. However, the exact details of the incident remain disputed.
Hari Dev Kaushal, the late Station House Officer of Delhi’s Chanakyapuri area, famously known for his efficient and caring demeanor in law enforcement, spearheaded the investigation. His passing at 91 leaves behind a significant legacy within the police force.
Kaushal is the father of actors Rahul Dev and Mukul Dev, who is known for writing Hansal Mehta’s 2017 Toronto film “Omerta”. Mukul collaborates with Suprotim Sengupta and Kunal Aneja on the scriptwriting team. They have delved deeply into their subject matter, utilizing both firsthand and secondary resources for research.
Ellipsis is presently working on securing Hari Dev Kaushal’s acting role, deciding on a director, and gathering actors to depict the crucial characters in the case.
Established in 2016, Ellipsis is the brainchild of Indian film industry veteran Tanuj Garg and multi-talented individual Atul Kasbekar who is known for his work as a photographer, talent agent, and producer. Ellipsis’ impressive portfolio includes the films “Tumhari Sulu” released in 2017 and the upcoming production “Looop Lapeta,” set to be released in 2022.
Garg was attracted to the bank scam case, which still holds many mysteries, as a fan of spy movies. Several people involved in investigating this case, including the main suspect, passed away shortly after the incident. We’re looking forward to completing our cast and starting filming soon.
In the early 1990s, Kasbekar worked on photography projects with Rahul and Mukul Dev. These men are not only my friends but I also had deep conversations with their father, Hari Dev Ji. It’s only fitting that he takes center stage in this captivating story.
