Being A Free Player In Amazon's New MMO Won't Be Quite So Rough, Thanks To New Changes

As a long-time MMORPG gamer with countless hours spent grinding levels and earning virtual currency in various games, I’m both excited and cautious about Amazon Games and NCSOFT’s announcement of Throne and Liberty coming to the West with major monetization changes.

Amazon’s gaming division is introducing the Western audience to Throne and Liberty, the free-to-play Korean MMORPG, in September. We now have insights into how Amazon plans to adjust this game’s business model to cater to the preferences of Western players.

On the Throne and Liberty blog, Amazon and NCSOFT discussed the varied monetization methods for the upcoming game, clarifying objectives, introducing primary currencies, and describing the mechanics of the five-day premium pre-release access.

To begin with, one of Amazon’s primary objectives for their game is to ensure that all players have equal access to upgrades and combat enhancements, regardless of whether they spend real money or not. In line with this goal, certain in-game store offerings will not be available. These include the sale of a key currency required for crafting and upgrading equipment, as well as potions and food that provide advantages to those who possess them. Additionally, quests and rewards linked exclusively to the paid battle pass have been eliminated. Amazon is still considering the implementation of an optional subscription called “Blessing of Solisium,” which was previously available in the Korean version of the MMO. However, its availability at launch remains uncertain as Amazon continues to assess how it can best cater to their player base.

In simple terms,

Before the official release of Throne and Liberty, the developers will provide an Early Access Pack for buyers. This pack grants access to the game five days earlier than others. However, some players are worried that this advantage could result in a significant edge in Throne and Liberty’s PvP-focused endgame for those who spend money. To alleviate these concerns, Amazon revealed that Throne and Liberty will debut with separate early access servers. Players who buy the Early Access Pack will begin their journey on these servers, while those joining on the free-to-play launch date can opt to join existing early access servers or start fresh on new servers. To ensure fairness, players who purchase early access won’t be able to transfer their characters between early access and launch servers for a set period of time. Additionally, the auction houses for both types of servers will remain disconnected.

Additional information regarding Throne and Liberty’s early access program will be shared during the open beta testing period, taking place from July 18-23. The game is scheduled to launch on PC and current-gen consoles on either September 17 or September 12 for those who opt for early access.

As a long-time fan of massively multiplayer online games (MMOs), I’m thrilled to share some exciting news with fellow gamers out there. You might have heard that Amazon’s “Throne and Liberty” isn’t going to be the only MMO they’ll be releasing this year. I’ve been following the gaming industry closely, and I can tell you that Amazon’s in-house developed game, New World, which originally came out in 2021, is getting a major update.
