WPP’s GroupM Names Brian Lesser Global CEO

As a movie buff with a deep appreciation for the business side of the entertainment industry, I can’t help but be intrigued by the career trajectory of Brian Lesser. The man is a true industry veteran, having made his mark in media and advertising circles for decades. His latest move, returning to WPP as Global CEO of GroupM, is a testament to his exceptional leadership skills and innovative mindset.

Brian Lesser, an experienced media executive with a background in top media investment positions at advertising agencies and clients, is coming back to WPP’s GroupM as their global CEO. This role is significant as it helps shape where advertisers allocate their budgets.

Christian Juhl, who has served as leader for the past five years, is passing on the role to his successor, Lesser. Juhl is moving within WPP to assume the position of president of corporate development.

Lesser takes the helm as some parts of the GroupM operation have come under scrutiny, with a parade of executives cycling through some of the company’s most senior U.S. leadership roles in recent years.

More recently, Infosum, an ad-tech company co-founded by Lesser, saw him step down as both chairman and CEO. He has since returned to WPP after a brief tenure as CEO at Xandr, AT&T’s advertising and analytics division now under Microsoft’s umbrella. During his time at AT&T, Lesser spearheaded initiatives to leverage their acquisitions of Time Warner and DirecTV to expand advertising offerings based on consumer data and behaviors.

I’ve had a fascinating career in digital advertising, and one pivotal moment was when I joined WPP through the acquisition of 24/7 Real Media back in 2007. It was an exciting time as I went on to create the Media Innovation Group, where we developed groundbreaking addressable advertising solutions and technology for GroupM. One of our first projects was creating one of the industry’s pioneering data management platforms.

Mark Read, WPP’s CEO, commented, “Brian is a well-respected executive in our industry with a history of accomplishment in data-driven and tech marketing.” He continued, “Brian has an intimate understanding of GroupM and a clear vision for the company’s future. We are thrilled to have him rejoin WPP.”

In November 2019, Juhl took over as CEO of GroupM, a position he had previously held at Essence, which was bought by WPP in 2015. Now, at WPP, he will focus on different areas of the company’s strategic growth.

I have a deep connection to both WPP and GroupM. Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate enough to witness their innovative and collaborative cultures firsthand, which has consistently led to exceptional results for advertisers. This is why I am overjoyed at the opportunity to rejoin GroupM as CEO. I can’t wait to work alongside my incredibly talented colleagues, engage in fruitful partnerships with industry peers, and invest in our impressive roster of global clients.
