As a film enthusiast who has followed the festival circuit for years, I am thrilled to see Michael Tyburski‘s new sci-fi romantic comedy “Turn Me On” selected for the prestigious New Directors competition at Spain’s San Sebastian Film Festival. Having been impressed by his debut film “The Sound of Silence,” which was a Sundance hit and an IFC Films U.S. pick-up, I am eager to see how he pushes the boundaries with this new project.
The San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain has announced the films competing in its New Directors category, including “Turn Me On,” a new work by Michael Tyburski, the director of the acclaimed Sundance film “The Sound of Silence.”
As I sat down in the dimly lit movie theater, I was excited to preview some highly anticipated films at this year’s festival. Among them were “Turn Me On,” a captivating sci-fi romantic comedy starring Bel Powley and Nick Robinson. Produced by IFC Films, it certainly stood out as a must-see title in the festival’s main lineup.
Last week, it was revealed that four distinct Spanish productions had been selected for San Sebastian’s New Directors showcase. Notably among them is “La guitarra flamenca de Yerai Cortés,” the long-awaited first film from renowned rapper, singer, and songwriter C.Tangana.
New Directors contestants are eligible for the Kutxabank-New Directors Award, valued at €50,000 ($54,500), which is evenly distributed between the winning director and Spanish film distributor.
Additionally, “Winter in Sokcho” by French-Japanese filmmaker Koya Kamura with Roschdy Zem and Bella Kim in the leading roles, “Regretfully at Dawn” helmed by Thai director Sivaroj Kongsakul, and “Stars and the Moon,” a second film from Chinese director Yong, have been chosen as New Directors.
