A sequel to the animated movie KPop Demon Hunters is still in the works, but it probably won’t be ready to stream on Netflix in 2029 as originally hoped. Studio officials have confirmed the project is in early development and will likely take longer than expected to finish.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures Animation co-president Kristine Belson responded to questions about the planned 2029 release date for a sequel. When the publication questioned if that timeline was realistic, Belson subtly signaled agreement that it might be too ambitious. She later explained that significant work on the sequel hasn’t started yet, as the creative team is still focused on the first film’s awards campaign and other related commitments.
What the Interview Revealed
Belson stated that directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, who worked on the initial KPop Demon Hunters film, need dedicated time to start developing the sequel. She explained they’ve been busy with award season, attending events and ceremonies. This suggests that actual production on the sequel hasn’t begun yet.

Damien de Froberville, a co-president at Sony Pictures Animation, also discussed the project, comparing the potential of KPop Demon Hunters to the successful Spider-Verse series. He believes the world of KPop is just as vibrant and offers plenty of opportunities to build a larger franchise. De Froberville envisions a sequel with a wide range of creative possibilities, blending supernatural elements with the exciting world of pop music.
Belson and de Froberville didn’t give a firm release date, suggesting 2029 might be unrealistic. However, they both emphasized that the project is a high priority once they begin pre-production. De Froberville explained that they want to take the time needed to develop the sequel properly, because the film’s rich story and world deserve careful attention.
Making a Sequel
It typically takes years to create major animated movies, involving development, story improvements, and actual production. For KPop Demon Hunters, the directors’ commitments to film awards season and ongoing discussions between Sony and Netflix are causing delays in starting formal production.
Sony and Netflix haven’t shared any official details about the sequel, like who will be in it, what the story will be, or when it will be made. While they’ve said talks are continuing, they haven’t confirmed a release date. Therefore, any dates mentioned in news reports – including 2029 – are just estimates, not confirmed plans.

Sources say Sony and Netflix agreed to make a second KPop Demon Hunters movie in late 2025, with an initial target release date around 2029. But recent statements from Sony leaders suggest the movie won’t be finished until after that year.
In previous interviews, directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans have said they haven’t been able to start planning a sequel because they’ve been busy promoting and celebrating the first film. Kang explained that the entire creative team has been fully focused on the original movie and hasn’t had a chance to consider a follow-up, highlighting how early the sequel is in development.

I’m really hoping we get a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters, and while Sony hasn’t announced when it’ll come out yet, the people in charge have been talking about it. It sounds like they’re taking their time to make sure it’s really good, which I totally understand! They’re not rushing things, so it might be a while, but I’d rather wait for something amazing than get a quick, half-hearted follow-up.
