Many horror movies create a sense of dread, but some, like The Lodge, are exceptionally unsettling. This Christmas horror film, featuring Jaeden Martell (known from It) and Riley Keough (Mad Max: Fury Road), is considered one of the most disturbing films of recent years. It’s definitely not for those easily scared, but it’s a perfect, and currently free, watch on Tubi as the snowy weather sets in.
Directed by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, known for their films Goodnight Mommy and The Devil’s Bath, The Lodge is a chilling, atmospheric horror film that puts a unique spin on the classic “cabin in the woods” trope. While it features some familiar scares, this critically praised movie offers something different than typical horror fare.
This film is a disturbing look inside a fractured psyche, and it’s so focused on mental breakdown that viewers might actually miss traditional scares. Forget ghosts and monsters – the true horror here is the devastating fragility of the human mind, and the lengths someone will go to in pursuit of their own twisted idea of redemption, isolated in a remote and desolate location.
Is There Anything More Sinister Than the Human Soul?
The movie The Lodge opens with a devastating event: Laura takes her own life after discovering her ex-husband, Richard, intends to remarry. Her children, Aiden and Mia, are now being raised by their father, and he introduces them to his new wife, Grace. Understandably, the children are upset about their father’s new relationship and the changes it brings.
Richard hopes his children will connect with his new wife, Grace, during the Christmas season. He arranges a holiday getaway for the four of them at a secluded lodge, but unexpectedly has to return to the city for work. This leaves young Grace alone with the children, who have been looking into her difficult past – she was a survivor of a religious cult.
Strange occurrences plague the group at the lodge. First, the dog disappears, followed by all the Christmas decorations. A broken generator cuts them off from the outside world just as a fierce blizzard rolls in. The children start experiencing frightening nightmares, leading Grace and them to believe they might be dead and in the afterlife. But things at the lodge aren’t as they appear.
‘The Lodge’s Ending Will Leave You in Pieces
The Lodge isn’t just incredibly suspenseful; it also takes a surprising turn in its final act, completely subverting expectations for this type of story. Without giving anything away, viewers anticipating a typical supernatural tale are in for a genuinely unsettling and unexpected twist that will likely stay with them long after the credits roll.

It would have been simpler to have the children and Grace fall into the usual tragic trope. Instead, the filmmakers – Franz and Fiala, with co-writer Sergio Casci – chose a shockingly bleak ending that will leave you deeply disturbed and questioning your beliefs. The conclusion is a powerful emotional blow that completely reframes the story, starkly illustrating the damaging consequences of emotional and psychological abuse. The final image is unforgettable.
