Known for its emotional impact as part of the “Dark Shonen Trio,” the anime Jujutsu Kaisen isn’t afraid to shock and upset its audience. The second season particularly stunned fans with the deaths of Nobara Kugisaki and Kento Nanami during the Shibuya Incident, and their loss continues to be felt as the third season progresses.
Losing Nanami was a huge blow to Jujutsu Kaisen, especially given how tragic his death was. While no one could truly fill his role, a new character is joining the series and might help ease the pain a bit.
Jujutsu Kaisen’s Hiromi Higuruma & Kento Nanami Have a Lot In Common
Simply dressing someone in a suit and claiming they’re a stand-in for a fan-favorite character doesn’t hold up. Higuruma and Nanami share more than just a good sense of style; they both dedicate themselves completely to their work, whether it’s helping the wealthy or tirelessly fighting cases they know they’ll lose.
It’s clear how dedicated they are to their current path, but it’s also a significant weight on both of them. Past disappointments in their careers before becoming jujutsu sorcerers left them feeling empty. This built up into frustration and sadness, making it hard to find meaning in anything they did.
Kento Nanami Chose the Path of Least Annoyance
Having escaped a dangerous world of sorcery that cost him many friends, Nanami threw himself into a demanding office job. He worked tirelessly to earn money for others, even though he often felt financially insecure himself. Despite his hard work, he found no satisfaction or appreciation in his career, and felt deeply unfulfilled.
He hadn’t felt truly fulfilled in his years working with finances, but everything changed when he lifted a strange curse from a woman he often saw at the bakery. Even though she didn’t fully grasp what he’d done for her, her gratitude gave him a sense of purpose he’d been missing.
Even after rejoining the world of jujutsu sorcery, Nanami remained deeply pessimistic. When he first met Yuji Itadori, he bluntly told him that being a sorcerer was awful. He’d returned to the profession after deciding that a regular job was just as bad. He figured that if both options were unpleasant, he’d rather endure the one he found more tolerable.
Hiromi Higuruma Actually Begins His JJK Journey as a Villain
Higuruma became a defense attorney because he wanted to fight unfairness. He strongly believed the legal system should be impartial, but he often encountered cases where that wasn’t true. In Japan, a surprisingly high number of criminal trials end with a conviction, even when the evidence isn’t strong or doesn’t quite add up.
Higuruma didn’t become a lawyer to simply prove people innocent; he wanted to completely destroy injustice. However, he constantly ran into a rigged system that blocked his efforts. Around the time his unique ability manifested, thanks to Kenjaku, he lost a case where all the proof showed his client was innocent. That was the final straw.
I was absolutely furious when the verdict came in – I demanded a retrial, but things quickly spiraled out of control in the worst way possible. After a horrific act – I killed both the judge and the prosecutor. It completely shattered my mind, especially with these… changes I was starting to feel inside. Eventually, though, I came to accept those changes, even embrace them. Honestly, the new rules felt so much clearer, a more direct path to real justice than the broken system I’d dedicated my life to understanding.
Yuji Itadori’s Selfless Optimism Softens Even the Hardest Hearts
Readers will soon realize that Hiromi Higuruma and Yuji Itadori rely on each other equally. Nanami didn’t understand the challenges when he first met Itadori, but by the end, he knew that guiding Sukuna’s host had helped him grow as a person.
Yuji will initially face Higuruma as an opponent. Although he and Nanami weren’t ever enemies, it took a lot of convincing for Yuji to gain his mentor’s trust. Once Nanami recognized Yuji’s true character, their relationship completely transformed, and Nanami became noticeably warmer, even seeming to care for the young man who was so determined to protect others.
When Higuruma and Itadori finally fight, it’s going to be a tough battle, much like Itadori’s first mission with Nanami. But Higuruma isn’t just trying to test Itadori; he wants to convince both of them that even though Itadori believes he’s responsible for Sukuna’s actions, he shouldn’t blame himself.
Throughout Season 3 of Jujutsu Kaisen, viewers have noticed a significant change in Yuji Itadori. The cheerful and selfless teenager who was willing to sacrifice himself is now burdened by guilt, blaming himself for actions committed while Sukuna controlled his body. This internal struggle might actually be what Itadori needs to reaffirm his true self, no matter what Sukuna does.
