A YouTuber is trying to break a record originally set by MrBeast, counting to 100,000 live on his stream. MrBeast’s original video, which gained over 33 million views almost nine years ago, launched him to fame.
MrBeast’s career really took off with a video he considers his first big hit: a nearly 24-hour livestream of him counting from one to 100,000. Uploaded on January 8, 2017, the video has since gained over 33 million views on YouTube.
MrBeast recently shared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that the challenge wasn’t filmed in complete isolation, despite how it looked on TV.
I was actually watching ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Naruto’ the whole time, but no one realizes that. It just looks like I’m sitting and staring at a wall for around 40 hours, and people probably think I’m wasting my time or acting foolish.
Now, YouTuber Lets Test Laurence is attempting to go one number further.
Counting to 100,001 live
Laurence started a livestream on February 13th with the goal of counting to 100,001, which he planned to do over about 40 hours. This is different from MrBeast’s video, which was pre-recorded; Laurence is broadcasting his entire attempt live to viewers.
As of right now, he’s been live streaming for more than a day and has gained 40,000 viewers, though the number of people watching at any given moment varies between eight and twenty.
This attempt clearly takes inspiration from MrBeast’s earlier challenge, and aims to beat his 2017 record by adding a single extra element.
Many people consider MrBeast’s video where he counted to 100,000 to be a key moment in his YouTube career. It was the start of his now-famous endurance challenges, which eventually grew into the big giveaway and competition videos he’s known for today. Although simple compared to his current work, the counting video is still a memorable early example of how he gained popularity on YouTube.
It’s still uncertain if Laurence will finish counting to 100,001. After getting to 40,000, he began to wonder if he had the stamina to beat MrBeast’s record.
