The hit CBS crime drama FBI will be back for a ninth season, the network has announced. Since its debut in 2018, FBI has grown into a franchise, all thanks to creator Dick Wolf, who also developed Law & Order. While one of its spinoffs, FBI: Most Wanted, recently ended after six seasons in May 2025, the original series will continue.
In addition to the main series, there was a spinoff called FBI: International that followed a special FBI team solving crimes and fighting terrorism around the world. It first aired in 2021 and lasted for four seasons, but was canceled in May. Fortunately, CBS is developing a new show called CIA, which is set to premiere at the end of February.
What Happened in FBI Season 8?
Season 8 of FBI has performed well with viewers, which is a key reason the show continues despite the cancellation of its spin-offs. The season premiere drew around 7.58 million viewers. The new season picks up right after the dramatic ending of Season 7, focusing on the uncertain situation surrounding Special Agent-in-Charge Isobel Castille (Alana de la Garza).
Despite Agent Castille eventually waking up and returning to her role as SAC, the season premiere deals a harsh blow to Special Agent Stuart Scola. This event significantly changes the dynamics within the FBI team, leading to Special Agent Eva Ramos joining as Scola’s new partner.
Maggie Bell and Omar Adom Zidan continue to be the strong center of the FBI team, both emotionally and strategically, offering support to their coworkers during difficult times. The season builds toward a dramatic two-part finale where a murder investigation reveals a larger, coordinated extremist plot against New York City.
The attack severely injures Assistant Special Agent-in-Charge Jubal’s son, but he ultimately survives. However, the incident deeply affects everyone, and Season 8 of FBI shifts towards a more continuous, emotionally driven storyline. The second half of the season will focus on how the agents cope with the trauma they experience as a result.
Who Stars in CBS’s FBI?
The main cast of FBI includes Missy Peregrym as Special Agent Maggie Bell, Zeeko Zaki as Special Agent OA Zidan, Jeremy Sisto as Assistant Special Agent in Charge Jubal Valentine, and Alana de la Garza as Special Agent-in-Charge Isobel Castille. These actors have been with the show since it began.
Despite consistent leadership and core cast members, FBI has experienced several cast changes over its run. For example, left the show before Season 3, and Katherine Renee Kane, who joined as Special Agent Tiffany Wallace in Season 3, departed after Season 7.
Season 8 of FBI saw a significant change with the departure of Emily Alabi as Agent Dani Rhodes and the arrival of Juliana Aiden Martinez as Special Agent Eva Ramos. This event deeply impacts the character of Stuart Scola, played by John Boyd, who has been a series regular since Season 2.
When Does FBI Season 9 Premiere?
Fans of the show FBI can look forward to its return in the fall of 2026-2027 as part of the network’s new TV season. It will likely air on Mondays at 9 pm Eastern time, the same slot it moved to during the 2025-2026 season, after CBS shifted its programming on Tuesdays.
Based on past seasons, the show FBI is expected to return in mid-October. This will follow the conclusion of Season 8, which will start back up at the end of February. In April 2024, CBS renewed FBI for three more seasons, guaranteeing it will air through at least Season 9.
Following the renewal of FBI, CBS has also extended several of its other hit shows. This includes crime dramas like Fire Country, as well as Matlock, Tracker, Elsbeth, Ghosts, Boston Blue, and Sheriff Country. The network is also bringing back unscripted favorites like Survivor and The Amazing Race, giving a clear picture of its plans for the 2026-2027 season.
