Today is Friday the 13th, and to celebrate (or warn us!), the creators of Stranger Things, Matt and Ross Duffer, along with their production company, Upside Down Productions, just released a trailer for their upcoming horror series, titled Something Very Bad is Going to Happen.
Even though the Duffer Brothers are now working with Paramount instead of Netflix, their production company is developing a new horror series intended to be genuinely frightening. Following the somewhat controversial conclusion to their hugely popular show Stranger Things, they’re hoping their next project will be a success and avoid a disappointing reception.
Netflix recently released the trailer for its upcoming series, Something Very Bad is Going to Happen, which will start streaming on March 26th. The trailer focuses on Camila Morrone’s character, Rachel, as she receives a flood of apologies while preparing for her wedding. These apologies feel unsettling, and the show’s creator, Haley Z. Boston, suggests that everyone around Rachel may be working against her leading up to her marriage to Nicky, played by Adam DiMarco. It’s unclear if the apologies are sincere, adding to the suspense.
Many horror films explore major life transitions: Carrie focuses on a girl’s coming-of-age, and Rosemary’s Baby deals with the terrors of motherhood. Now, Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen offers a chilling take on getting married. Rachel (Camila Morrone) is just five days away from her wedding and, along with her fiancé Nicky (Adam DiMarco), travels to his family’s remote, snow-covered vacation home for a small, private ceremony.
It would be wonderful, but Rachel is plagued by superstition and fear, constantly believing something terrible is about to occur. A string of strange coincidences and unsettling events fuel her anxiety, leading her to wonder what truly connects two people as soulmates. Even more frightening, she worries about the possibility of spending a lifetime with the wrong person.
The Duffer Brothers have three new series coming to Netflix: Something Very Bad is Going to Happen, The Boroughs, and Stranger Things: Tales from ’85. Plus, a recording of their Stranger Things prequel play, The First Shadow, will also be available to stream.
I’m really excited about this new limited series! It’s only eight episodes, and each one unfolds over a single day right before Rachel’s wedding. The cast is fantastic – Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jeff Wilbusch, Karla Crome, and others. What’s particularly intriguing is how the show portrays Rachel, played by Boston, as her anxiety builds as the wedding nears. Apparently, some weird things start happening with her fiancé’s family, which really fuels her paranoia. It sounds like a really tense and gripping story!
We constantly considered how she would feel, even when she wasn’t on screen, while building the show. It’s meant to capture that feeling of meeting your partner’s family for the first time – walking into a situation with a history you don’t know, and trying to navigate it.
Netflix’s horror series Something Very Bad is Going to Happen will be released on March 26.
