To celebrate Friday the 13th, Mubi revealed the first images from director Jane Schoenbrun’s new film, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miamsa, which stars Gillian Anderson (known for The X-Files) and Hannah Einbinder (Hacks). The film will hit theaters on August 7, 2026. It centers on a queer filmmaker who gets the opportunity to revive a beloved horror series, and their attempt to cast the original film’s reclusive final girl. This leads both women on a journey filled with longing, disorientation, and terror.
Jane Schoenbrun, the director of the acclaimed 2024 film I Saw the TV Glow, is releasing a new movie called Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miamsa. The film stars Anderson and Einbinder, along with Amanda Fix (Orphan Black: Echoes), Arthur Conti (Beetlejuice Beetlejuice), Eva Victor (Sorry, Baby), Zach Cherry (Severance), Sarah Sherman (Saturday Night Live), Patrick Fischler (Mad Men), Dylan Baker (Spider-Man 2), Jasmin Savoy Brown (Yellowjackets), Quintessa Swindell (Black Adam), Kevin McDonald (Lilo & Stitch), and Jack Haven (I Saw the TV Glow). ‘Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miamsa’ Enters Competitive Summer Movie Season

Jane Schoenbrun, the director of Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miamsa, has said the film is a blend of the slasher style of Friday the 13th and the atmospheric romance of A Portrait of a Lady on Fire. Releasing it in August feels right, as several Friday the 13th movies – including Friday the 13th Part III, Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday, and Freddy vs. Jason – also came out that month. Since August marks the end of summer, it’s a natural time to release a film set at summer camp, or one that pays tribute to the classic summer camp horror series.
Early August 2026 looks like it will be a busy time at the movies. Universal Pictures is releasing a new romantic comedy called One Night Only, directed by Will Gluck and starring Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner. Fans of the Super Troopers series can look forward to the third film from Searchlight Pictures. Bleaker Street is releasing a horror thriller, The Third Parent, with Crispin Glover, Rob Lowe, and Roselyn Sánchez. These new releases, along with Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miamsa, will be competing with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is entering its second weekend.

Even though Mubi is a smaller film distributor, they’re hoping their new movie, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miamsa, will be a success, following the positive reception and awards attention of their previous film, The Substance. Director Schoenbrun’s last movie, I Saw the TV Glow, was highly praised, even receiving a recommendation from Martin Scorsese. With a strong cast and a chance to appeal to fans of classic slasher films like Friday the 13th – especially while that franchise is on hold – Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miamsa is definitely a film to watch this summer.
