Good news for fans of medical dramas! A remake of the popular British series Doc Martin, called Best Medicine, is moving forward with plans for a fresh season.
The new Fox comedy, Best Medicine, launched in early January 2026 and has quickly become popular. The first episode attracted 3.69 million viewers when it aired after a pair of NFL games, and total viewership across all platforms reached 10.8 million. The show’s consistently strong ratings suggest a promising future.
Fox is likely to renew Best Medicine for a second season, reports Deadline. In addition to decent viewership numbers, Fox owning the show outright through Fox Entertainment Studios is also a significant reason why a renewal is probable.
In addition to “The Floor is Lava,” Fox is also expected to renew other new series like Patrick Dempsey’s “Memory of a Killer” and Johnny Knoxville’s “Fear Factor: House of Fear.” These three shows together helped Fox achieve its most successful mid-season premieres in over a decade.
Shows like Doc, Murder in a Small Town, and Animal Control are likely to be renewed. However, Going Dutch, currently in its second season, might be canceled – its future is uncertain, according to Deadline.
The new comedy series Best Medicine features Josh Charles, known from The Good Wife, as Dr. Martin Best. He’s a doctor who’s ironically afraid of blood, and the show follows his move from a comfortable life in Boston to practice medicine in a small town in Maine. The cast also includes Abigail Spencer, Josh Segarra, Cree and Annie Potts.
Liz Tuccillo leads the production of the series as showrunner, with Jamie Babbit, Tyson Bidner, Jaime Eliezer Karas, Mark Crowdy, Philippa Braithwaite, Rodney Ferrell, Howard T. Owens, and Ben Silverman all serving as executive producers.
Although Best Medicine is generally well-received, there’s a noticeable difference in opinion between critics and viewers. Critics give it a 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences only give it a 55%.
The new comedy, Best Medicine, is inspired by the popular British show Doc Martin, which ran for ten seasons between 2004 and 2022. Both shows feature a doctor with a similar personality – Martin Clunes plays Dr. Martin Ellingham in Doc Martin, and the character shares traits with the doctor played by Charles in Best Medicine.
The series also featured performances by Caroline Catz, Ian McNeice, Joe Absolom, Selina Cadell, John Marquez, Eileen Atkins, and Jessica Ransom. Notably, the executive producer of Best Medicine, Crowdy, held the same position on Doc Martin.
The popular British show Doc Martin has been recreated in several countries, including the Czech Republic, Slovakia, France, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, and Spain. Now, a U.S. version is being made, and actor Clune is scheduled to make a special appearance in a future episode.
Best Medicine airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. EST on Fox.
