The article contains spoilers for the Spartacus: House of Ashur season 1 finale.
Okay, so I was SO excited to hear this! Apparently, there’s a chance Spartacus: House of Ashur could actually happen! Steven S. DeKnight, who created the show, and Tenika Davis, who played Naevia, have both hinted that they’d be up for doing another season. Fingers crossed it actually happens – I’d love to see more of that world!
Starz launched House of Ashur in early December, a new story set in the world of Spartacus. The series reimagines the origins of Ashur (played by Nick E. Taraby), following his struggle for power amidst the dangerous landscape of Roman politics. He teams up with Achillia (played by Davis), a determined warrior, and together they pose a serious threat to the Roman upper class.

In a recent interview with Tatiana Hullender from ScreenRant about the end of Spartacus: House of Ashur season one, DeKnight revealed he’s already written a second season and hinted at exciting things to come. He explained that the television industry has evolved, which might mean fans will have to be patient for updates on season two. However, he remains hopeful, as you can see in the quote below.
It’s frustrating, actually! Things have really changed. In the past, shows had 22 episodes a year, aired on a network, and you’d know the ratings the very next day. Now, with all the different streaming platforms and licensing deals, it takes three or four weeks to gather all the viewership data. We’re still waiting for those numbers to come in.
We’re feeling really optimistic! The show is performing incredibly well, both here and internationally, and the response from viewers has been amazing. We’re hoping this means we’ll be back in New Zealand later this year to film more episodes.
The interviewer then asks DeKnight if there are any storylines he’d like to explore further if House of Ashur gets a second season. DeKnight says he’s particularly interested in developing Achillia’s story and introducing more gladiators to the Starz series. He also hints at what might happen with the character of Ashur in the future.
I feel like season one covered everything I intended to, and I’m eager to build on that. I’d like to explore more romantic storylines and complicated relationships. With Ashur becoming popular with Achillia, we’ll be developing his story further. We also plan to introduce new gladiators – both men and women – and create more intense drama in the arena.
Things are about to get much more intense upstairs, now that it’s clear Ashur is the one who committed the murder. If anyone discovers his involvement, he’ll face severe consequences, so he’s in a really difficult situation.
I wanted Caesar’s death to represent Ashur finally standing up to the Romans, after constantly trying to appease them all season. Killing Caesar is his way of declaring independence and asserting dominance – a signal that he’s no longer trying to conform to Roman society, but demanding their submission. It’s Ashur fully embracing his true self and returning to his more assertive, original ways.
I’m really excited about what could happen with Achillia in season two of House of Ashur! When asked about it, Davis said there are so many possibilities, and honestly, season one left me completely shocked at times, so I can’t wait to see where they take the story next. She’s clearly excited too, and that makes me even more hyped!
Thinking about season two, I’m excited by all the unexpected things that could happen. The writers constantly surprised me with the directions they took the characters, and that’s what makes the show so engaging and fun to watch with everyone.
The first season finale of House of Ashur premiered on February 6th, as reported by DeKnight. It may take some time for viewers to learn what the future holds for the cast – including Graham McTavish, Claudia Black, Jamaica Vaughan, Ivana Baquero, Leigh Gill, Jordi Webber, and India Shaw-Smith – with Lucy Lawless returning as Lucretia in a special guest role.
The second season of Spartacus: House of Ashur might bring back some characters fans already know. Having Steven DeKnight involved is a good sign too – he originally developed the Spartacus TV series and has a strong background in popular genre shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Smallville, and the Netflix series Daredevil. Plus, the show’s alternate timeline storyline has been well-received, earning a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
