‘Stranger Things’ Star Joe Keery Addresses Conformity Gate Theory

With Joe Keery’s new movie hitting cinemas, many fans are still struggling to accept that Stranger Things is finished. Despite the show’s finale, some continue to hope for a secret extra episode, a belief fueled by disappointment. Keery’s latest role is in Cold Storage, a funny and thrilling sci-fi movie with Georgina Campbell and Liam Neeson, which is now available to watch. Though his Stranger Things co-stars have tried to debunk the ‘Conformity Gate’ fan theory, Keery playfully acknowledges the imaginative idea that’s captured so many viewers.

Ahead of the release of the film Cold Storage, which has received a positive 79% score on Rotten Tomatoes, MovieWeb spoke with actors Joe Keery and Campbell. The movie, directed by Jonny Campbell and written by David Koepp, is a genre blend that follows two self-storage employees facing a crisis far beyond their normal duties—a situation reminiscent of Keery’s role in Season 3 of the popular Netflix series. The plot centers around a dangerous parasitic fungus accidentally released from government containment, and the efforts of Travis and Naomi to stop it from spreading and threatening the world. When MovieWeb questioned Keery about a particular theory surrounding the film, he jokingly dismissed the idea.

MovieWeb asked if I’d been following the popular fan theory about ‘Conformity Gate’ and its connection to Stranger Things. They wanted to know if I’d looked into it.

Joe Keery: “I knew there was no episode.”

Georgina Campbell: “You would know. I followed it.”

Joe Keery: “Unless… there’s no episode. I knew there was no episode.”

It was unbelievable! Everyone was talking about it. I even checked Netflix that night, hoping for a surprise release. I really got caught up in all the excitement.

Joe Keery: “How did this happen? It’s great, though. Whoever started is a genius, right?”

Keery seems to have discovered something important. The #ConformityGate rumor really took off, even prompting fans to search Netflix for a hidden episode.

Theory or Coping Mechanism?

It’s common for fans to be sad when a long-running show ends, but the ‘#ConformityGate’ theory seems to have unusually strong support. This might be because many viewers were disappointed with the actual finale, which aired on New Year’s Eve 2025. While shows like Lost and Game of Thrones also faced criticism after their finales, Stranger Things sparked even more fan speculation by leaving several plot points unresolved. The popularity of the ‘#ConformityGate’ theory reflects how fans felt about the ending, which isn’t surprising for a show known for its exciting battles and surprising twists.
