Man on the run for 16 years arrested after visiting Italy for Olympic hockey

After 16 years as a fugitive, a 44-year-old man from Slovakia was arrested in Italy. He had been avoiding authorities for crimes committed there, but returned to the country to attend the Winter Olympics, ultimately leading to his capture.

The 2026 Winter Olympics have begun in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, bringing together top athletes from around the globe to compete in winter sports such as speed skating, figure skating, and bobsledding, among others.

People everywhere are watching the events unfold, but one man felt so strongly about being there live that he risked imprisonment to do so.

In 2010, a Slovakian man robbed several stores in Italy, leading police to issue a warrant for his arrest.

The man, now 44, had been in hiding for 16 years. He remained hidden until the Winter Olympics were held in Milan.

A middle-aged hockey enthusiast decided to travel to Milan and stay at a guesthouse just outside the city to cheer on the Slovakian national team in their hockey games.

So, turns out this guy wasn’t so clever after all. A hotel spotted him and called the cops, who quickly found him and took him in. Now he’s locked up in San Vittore prison for 11 months and seven days – basically, he’s paying the price for messing with people’s stuff. It’s a long time to be grounded, if you ask me!

The Winter Olympics have been full of memorable moments, many of which have spread quickly online. One highlight was a Spanish figure skater who successfully performed a routine based on the movie ‘Minions’ even after receiving a copyright warning from Universal Pictures. Another athlete won fans’ hearts by asking her professor for extra time on a school assignment so she could compete in the Games.

Olympic speed skater Jutta Leerdam not only won a gold medal, but she also set a new world record! Her fiancé, YouTube star Jake Paul, was overjoyed and visibly emotional, celebrating her win in a heartfelt moment that quickly went viral on social media.
