Russo Brothers “can’t see” Avengers: Doomsday working without one key Marvel hero

The upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie involves multiple universes crashing into each other, all while Doctor Doom poses a major threat. However, according to the directors, the Russo brothers, the film wouldn’t have been successful without a specific Marvel hero.

Okay, so Marvel’s being super secretive about what’s going to happen in this new movie, but I’m SO excited because it looks like the Avengers are finally going to meet the X-Men! And even better, it seems like they’re bringing back the actors we already love from the Fox movies – like James Marsden as Cyclops, Patrick Stewart as Professor X, and Ian McKellen as Magneto! It’s going to be amazing to see them all together.

This current team-up is likely building towards an even larger event planned for the movie Avengers: Secret Wars, scheduled to come out in December 2027. The Secret Wars storyline in the comics involves massive destruction of the multiverse caused by colliding realities. Doctor Doom then takes the remaining pieces and creates a new, warped world called Battleworld, which he controls.

Ultimately, none of this matters if the Avengers: Doomsday plot isn’t successful. The directors, the Russos, believe the movie wouldn’t work without a specific Marvel hero.

The Russo Brother say Avengers: Doomsday won’t work without a founding Avenger

In an interview with Empire, the directors, the Russo Brothers, explained that the story of Avengers: Doomsday relies on Captain America (Chris Evans). As fans know from Avengers: Endgame, Steve Rogers went back in time to replace the Infinity Stones and then chose to live a different life with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell).

The initial teaser for Doomsday showed the character reflecting on his past – looking at his old uniform and holding his child. According to Anthony Russo, they feel a strong connection to this character and believe he’s essential to the story. Russo explained that the character’s importance within the group dynamic means he needs to be a key part of what happens next.

The creators hinted that the next installment will have a more intricate plot. This won’t be a problem, as the story will explore different universes and timelines, and will feature Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. (They likely meant a deeper, more involved story, not just a longer one.)

We enjoy making these films fun, but we also embrace the challenging storytelling they allow. ‘Doomsday’ really pushes that boundary, offering a new level of narrative complexity,” he said. Joe Russo then pointed out, “The character of Victor von Doom requires a specific, serious approach.”
