Okay, so the amazing news is Severance is getting a Season 3! We’re all so hyped for more, but there’s a bit of a downer – a lot of fans are actually pretty upset about something that came along with the announcement. It’s a bit frustrating, honestly, because we just want more of the show we love!
Apple TV+ has officially taken full ownership of the sci-fi series Severance, acquiring all rights from its previous production studio, Fifth Season, as reported by Deadline.
Because the show’s production costs are rising – with each episode of Season 2 costing around $20 million – this deal will help Apple TV better control the show’s finances.
I’m hearing some amazing news about Severance! Apparently, the creators are planning for at least four seasons, which is fantastic. And even more exciting, Dan Erickson and Ben Stiller are even talking about potentially building out the Severance universe with prequels or spinoffs. As a huge fan, I’m really hoping they get to explore more of that world!
Severance fans frustrated over Season 3 plans

According to sources at Apple TV+, filming for Season 3 of Severance is currently planned to begin in the summer of 2026. However, this timeline is not definite, as the writing process is still underway.
Viewers are excited the show is coming back, but many think a summer 2026 release date is unrealistic. They’re remembering the long, three-year gap between the first and second seasons, and are concerned about another lengthy wait.
It’s been a year since Season 2 ended, and even though the creators say the next season won’t take as long, fans aren’t expecting a third chapter to arrive anytime soon.
Honestly, the reaction online was pretty harsh. One Redditor straight up said this wasn’t going to last, that it just wasn’t a good plan for the long run. Another joked that we wouldn’t see another season for years – like, 2028! And someone else predicted a decade between the first and fourth seasons. It’s looking like a long wait, if we get another season at all.
A fourth asked, “Can someone please tell me why all shows are like this now? I’m being serious.”

Many popular TV shows are now taking longer and longer breaks between seasons. For example, it was over three years between seasons four and five of Stranger Things, and fans have been waiting four years for the next season of Euphoria. Severance is following this trend.
These shows faced delays due to issues like the Hollywood strikes and scheduling problems, but another key factor was increased production complexity. Modern shows take longer to film and finish due to higher production values.
Someone else on Reddit explained that the gap between seasons often happens because most big TV shows now use contracts that cover just one season at a time. Actors sign on to film for a single season, and then the show has to renegotiate contracts if they want them back for another season.
Coordinating schedules for 15 to 25 actors who aren’t already committed to the show is incredibly challenging, as they’re all busy with other work and require a lot of paperwork and time to arrange.

Ultimately, this approach leads to long gaps between new seasons of the show. While I’m not sure if it’s better for the actors or the production company, it definitely lowers costs and reduces the risk if the show isn’t well-received.
Many people expressed similar frustrations in a Reddit discussion about the delay. One commenter wrote, “I enjoy Severance, but waiting over three years for just ten episodes is too long. Even two years feels like a stretch.”
Another quipped, “At this rate Adam Scott will be pushing 60 by the time this show finishes.”
Potential Severance spinoffs divides viewers
Some viewers are okay with the show taking breaks between seasons, but they’re not excited about the possibility of it creating new, separate shows.

One viewer said they weren’t worried about how long Season 3 would take, but disliked the thought of spinoffs happening after a potential fourth season. Another viewer agreed, stating that some shows simply don’t need extra series or prequels, and this was one of them.
One person expressed strong dislike for the idea of an expanding universe, saying it made the story feel overly complex and detailed, rather than lighthearted and funny.
Despite the criticism, many disagree, with one person pointing out, “People felt the same way about Breaking Bad, and I actually thought the prequel was even better.”

Someone else mentioned that Ben Stiller had explained last summer why he wouldn’t be directing any episodes of Season 3 – he was occupied with a different project, but hoped to direct future episodes when his schedule allowed.
The good news is that Severance will return for a third season. Since season two was a step up from the first, fans are expecting great things from the next installment.
According to Patricia Arquette, filming for the summer of 2026 is still a possibility. She told TopMob last October that while the script is still being written, they’re hoping to begin shooting either in the spring or early summer.
