Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has responded to rumors surrounding Pirates of the Caribbean 6, clarifying details about potential storylines involving Jack Sparrow’s son and Margot Robbie joining the series.
A sixth Pirates of the Caribbean movie is in the works, but details about the plot and who will star in it have been uncertain. A reboot featuring Margot Robbie was announced in 2018, but she later confirmed in 2022 that the project was cancelled. It’s also unclear if Johnny Depp will return as Jack Sparrow, though some reports suggest the story might focus on Jack Sparrow’s son.
Jerry Bruckheimer, the producer of all five previous Pirates of the Caribbean movies and the upcoming sixth one, recently told Entertainment Tonight that progress is being made, saying, “They’re close on part of it. That’s all I’ll tell ya.” While he didn’t reveal whether Jack Sparrow’s son or actor Greg Robbie will appear in the next film, his comment confirms that the sequel is still in development and moving closer to production.
It’s been nearly ten years since the last Pirates of the Caribbean movie, Dead Men Tell No Tales, came out in 2017. That film earned $795 million worldwide on a $230 million budget, showing the franchise was still popular. However, continuing the series has been difficult due to Johnny Depp’s legal issues with Amber Heard and his unwillingness to return to Disney after they publicly distanced themselves from him during the allegations in 2018.
Margot Robbie has starred in a range of films since 2018, from massive hits like Barbie, which earned $1.4 billion worldwide and became a cultural phenomenon, to popular comic book movies like Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad where she played Harley Quinn. She’s also appeared in films that didn’t perform as well, such as Babylon, Amsterdam, and A Big Bold Beautiful Journey. Her latest project is a new version of Wuthering Heights directed by Emerald Fennell, co-starring Jacob Elordi. Despite some box office ups and downs, Robbie’s popularity and past successes could make her a strong candidate for a role in Pirates of the Caribbean 6 at Disney.
Continuing the story with Jack Sparrow’s son would be similar to what the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean film did, focusing on the children of previous characters. The movie highlighted Henry Turner, the son of Elizabeth and Will Turner, and Carina Smyth, the daughter of Hector Barbossa. Introducing Jack’s son in Pirates of the Caribbean 6 would finish building out this next generation. It could also bring back Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom, following their characters’ reunion with Henry. The ending of the last film even hinted at a possible return for Bill Nighy as Davey Jones.
