More than twenty years after it first came out, The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl is now a popular movie on Netflix, reaching audiences around the world.
I’m really excited about this new superhero movie! The lead actor is Taylor Lautner – I remember him as Jacob Black from the Twilight Saga movies, but I was surprised to learn he actually started out as Sharkboy in The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl way back in 2005! It’s cool to see how far he’s come.
After 21 years, The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl is currently the 10th most popular movie on Netflix worldwide. For the week of February 2nd to 8th, it received 2.8 million views and a total of 4.3 million hours of watch time. It’s behind other popular titles like The Investigation of Lucy Letby at number one, The Rip, KPop Demon Hunters, In the Land of Saints and Sinners, and Sweet Home Alabama which is in fifth place.
The bottom four movies on the chart are Overboard (2018), Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, Night at the Museum, and Copshop, landing in ninth place. This week, The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl is a top 10 film in 19 countries across Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as in Germany.
Robert Rodriguez, known for the Spy Kids movies, directs and co-wrote The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl. The film centers on a 10-year-old boy whose imagination brings the superheroes Sharkboy and Lavagirl to life, transporting him to their world, Planet Drool. Together, they must stop the villains Mr. Electric and Minus from covering the planet in darkness.
The movie stars Taylor Lautner as Sharkboy, alongside Taylor Dooley as Lavagirl, Cayden Boyd as Max, and David Arquette and Kristin Davis as Max’s parents. George Lopez plays Mr. Electric, with Jacob Davich as Minus and Sasha Pieterse as Ice Princess.
Critics strongly disliked The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl, giving it a low 20% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Many felt that making the children’s story into a 3-D movie was a mistake. The film used an older style of 3-D, called anaglyph, which director Robert Rodriguez had also used in his 2003 movie Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over.
Despite receiving a low audience score of 34% on Rotten Tomatoes and underperforming at the box office – earning only $72 million on a $50 million budget – The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl gained a dedicated following, particularly among those who grew up in the 2000s. This led to a sequel, We Can Be Heroes (2020), released on Netflix, although Taylor Lautner did not reprise his role as Sharkboy.
