While Christopher Nolan’s film Interstellar was a big hit, he had trouble with one particular scene because of Timothée Chalamet’s acting.
Christopher Nolan consistently delivers high-quality films; it’s rare to find one that doesn’t impress.
Christopher Nolan consistently delivers exceptional films. Memento is a famously complex and brilliant movie, and his Batman trilogy redefined the superhero genre. Dunkirk is widely considered a top-tier war film, and our review of Oppenheimer highlighted it as the culmination of his entire career.
The 2014 science fiction film Interstellar was a huge commercial success, earning almost $800 million globally. However, the director wasn’t satisfied with one particular scene when it was made.
Timothée Chalamet hit “dark tone” that wasn’t right for Interstellar

The film Interstellar boasts a stellar cast including Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine, Ellen Burstyn, and Matt Damon. It also marked one of the early significant roles for Timothée Chalamet.
The director and lead actor recently came together for a special 70mm IMAX showing of their film, where the actor shared that it’s his personal favorite of his own work.
Even though I wasn’t a major part of Interstellar – I was pretty far down the list of actors, around number 12 – the movie came at a perfect time in my life and career, when things were still uncertain. It’s become my all-time favorite project, and I’ve watched it more times than any other film ever made.
Chalamet shared that he was very upset after seeing the final cut of the movie, as many of his scenes didn’t make it in.
There was one shot, during that really emotional part where Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) is watching messages from his kids, that actually stressed out Chris Nolan, the director, while we were filming it. He told me about it later – it was a tough one to get right!
During filming of the messages from home, you seemed to be focusing on really sad or negative emotions, and it felt excessive to me. I mentioned this to you, but you ultimately did what you wanted anyway and continued with it.
I realized he had a clear vision and wasn’t going to change his mind just to please me. He’d already made his plans and wasn’t going to abandon them on a whim. He seemed to be testing my interest, seeing if I’d continue to pursue him, but I didn’t. I’ll try to understand his reasoning when I review the footage.
You can currently watch Timothée Chalamet in Marty Supreme, and Christopher Nolan’s new film, The Odyssey, will be released in theaters this summer.
