The Monsterverse is expanding its story with season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and it’s going to explore events from the past. The new season will revisit a storyline familiar to fans of the classic Heisei-era Godzilla films. While the Monsterverse movies have generally moved forward in time, the first season of Monarch focused on the aftermath of Godzilla’s fight with the MUTOs in San Francisco.
Throughout the first season, a second story emerged, revealing the origins of the hidden Monarch organization in the 1950s. These two narratives eventually came together when characters from both eras met in a strange location called the Axis Mundi. This place, existing outside of both the surface world and Hollow Earth, introduced bizarre physics and opened up exciting new directions for the entire Monsterverse.
Monarch’s Use Of Axis Mundi Makes Time Travel Feasible
Beyond its stunning appearance, the most fascinating thing about the lost world of Axis Mundi is how time behaves differently than in our world or within Hollow Earth. Cate Randa encounters her grandmother, Keiko Miura, who looks exactly as she did when she disappeared into Axis Mundi in 1959, naturally raising questions about the nature of time within this place.
Although 56 years had passed on Earth, Keiko had only spent 57 days in Axis Mundi due to the strange effects of time within that realm. Axis Mundi is located inside a network of tunnels – known as the Vile Vortex or Vile Vortices – that connect the surface world to the Hollow Earth. These tunnels maintain gravity on both sides and create areas, like pockets of air, where time and space are heavily distorted.
Thankfully, the first season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters doesn’t get bogged down in the complex science of gravity and time. However, the show establishes that time travel is possible – as seen with Keiko. She entered the Axis Mundi location in 1959 and emerged in 2015, appearing almost the same age, effectively traveling through time.
This development allows for exciting time travel possibilities involving both the human characters and the Titans within the Monsterverse. The established cinematic universe has already demonstrated a tendency to pit Kong and Godzilla against historical enemies, and the time-altering effects of Axis Mundi could lead to compelling backstories for future villains. With the gravitational anomalies of Axis Mundi, rapid evolution, mutation, and travel through time are all now possible.
Time Travel Was At The Heart Of 1991’s Godzilla Vs. King Ghidorah
Look, Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah isn’t exactly a top-tier Godzilla film, but it’s got a plot that’s seriously out there – and I mean that in a good way! It involves this group calling themselves the Futurians – honestly, the name is a little silly – who travel back in time from the future to try and prevent Godzilla from even becoming Godzilla. Apparently, in their timeline, he evolved from a Godzillasaurus after being hit with radiation, and they’re trying to rewrite history to save their future Japan. It’s a wonderfully weird premise, honestly.
Their plan was surprisingly bizarre: travel back in time and swap Godzilla with three small dragons named Dorats. These dragons would then be exposed to radiation, transforming them into the three-headed King Ghidorah, who would destroy Japan. While the plot is riddled with scientific inaccuracies and weak writing, it’s undeniably unique within the history of Godzilla films.
It’s exciting that Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is revisiting time travel. I’m optimistic they’ll handle it more cleverly than the original 1991 Godzilla film. The second season will probably explore the science behind Axis Mundi in more detail, and hopefully, it will be easier to follow than before.
