The Lincoln Lawyer Season 4 Breaks 1 Series Tradition

Okay, so I just finished the new season of The Lincoln Lawyer and honestly, it shook things up in a really interesting way. After a long wait – a year and a half, can you believe it? – the show is back, and it doesn’t waste any time throwing you right into the drama. Remember that cliffhanger at the end of season three? Well, this season flips the script completely. Instead of defending other people, Mickey Haller is now the one on trial, and has to defend himself in a murder case. It’s a big change for the series, but I think it totally works and keeps things fresh.

Everyone knows Mickey didn’t kill Sam Scales, but he’s forced to prove he didn’t do it, not just that he’s not guilty. This sets off a thrilling and almost flawless season of The Lincoln Lawyer. As expected from Michael Connelly, the story is full of emotional scenes and features a key character involved in the murder dying before the trial even begins.

The new Netflix series does switch things up in one significant way, departing from a long-standing practice that’s been in place since the beginning.

Every Season Of The Lincoln Lawyer Sets Up The Next Season’s Case In The Finale

A hallmark of The Lincoln Lawyer is that each season’s finale introduces the central case for the next season. Season 1 ended by teasing a case involving a man with a tattoo, which became a notable part of Season 2, though not necessarily the main storyline. Similarly, the end of Season 2 set up the murder connected to Glory Days.

The third season of The Lincoln Lawyer concluded with Sam Scales’ murder and Mickey’s arrest. But the season 4 finale does something different: it doesn’t set up a new legal case to be resolved in the already-planned season 5. This shift actually aligns with the source material – the book the show is based on.

Why The Lincoln Lawyer Season 4 Had To Break Tradition

Instead of focusing on a murder mystery, The Law of Innocence takes a surprising turn when the COVID-19 pandemic begins as the book ends. Mickey, Maggie, and Hayley isolate together, and the FBI finally arrests the cartel after they attempt to harm Mickey. The family then adjusts to a new routine, carefully managing their supplies like food and toilet paper.

To keep the story consistent, the endings of The Law of Innocence and the beginning of Resurrection Walk would have needed major revisions. More importantly, changing things would have shifted focus away from Mickey finally gaining his freedom and reconnecting with his sister.

The Lincoln Lawyer Season 4’s Finale Still Sets Up Season 5 In A Different Way

Although the finale of The Lincoln Lawyer season 4 didn’t establish the main legal case for the next season, it did lay the groundwork for future storylines. The show introduced Mickey’s sister, who is expected to be a significant character in season 5.

As a big fan of The Lincoln Lawyer, I’m really curious to see what happens with Lisa Trammell in season 5. Even if she doesn’t end up working alongside Mickey Haller in the same way Bosch did, I have a feeling she’s going to have a big emotional effect on him, and maybe even on Hayley and Maggie too. Cobie Smulders actually described the new season as “a family affair” in an interview with Komo News, which definitely hints at some deeper personal connections coming into play.

Ted Humphrey has revealed connections between the characters of Alison and Bosch, noting some clear similarities. He also confirmed that Alison will be central to Mickey Haller’s next major case in The Lincoln Lawyer, and appears to be a key figure in the upcoming fifth season.
