Twitch is testing a new ad system that will show commercials to viewers who pause streams for a while. Many users are already expressing their dislike of the change.
Advertising on Twitch is a common but often debated issue. While ads are a major source of income for streamers, they can interrupt the viewing experience and cause viewers to miss important content. Because of this, some streamers choose to run ads at specific times, similar to how television broadcasts work.
While you can pay for Twitch Prime or Turbo to remove ads, not everyone can afford those subscriptions. Twitch has also started showing ads around the edges of the screen, allowing the stream to continue playing with minimal interruption.
So, they’re changing how ads work now, and it’s kinda annoying. Basically, if you pause the stream to grab a drink or something, you’ll still get hit with ads. It’s definitely going to impact anyone who isn’t glued to the screen the whole time.
Twitch adds new ads for paused streams
Now, if you pause a live stream, you might see ads play, even if you step away from watching.
Twitch is testing a new type of ad that will show up when viewers pause a stream. This is part of their effort to make ads less disruptive and give creators more ways to earn money, according to a February 9th announcement from Twitch Support.
“The skippable ads experiment is still ongoing at the same time.”
We’re testing a new type of ad that appears when someone pauses a stream. This is part of our effort to make ads less disruptive and give creators more ways to earn money. We’re also continuing to test skippable ads at the same time.

Twitch’s pause ads bring criticism
The announcement caused a lot of criticism from both viewers and creators, who expressed their concerns to Twitch.
DansGaming pointed out that while he likes the effort to make ads less disruptive, the delay of 30 seconds to 6 minutes when unpausing will likely be a problem. He suggests ads that play within the stream – allowing viewers to continue watching and listening while the ad runs – would be a much better solution.
One viewer wondered why anyone would pause a live stream. Another suggested Twitch should follow YouTube’s lead and offer ads that viewers can skip.
I understand the effort to make ads less disruptive, but this approach isn’t very effective because viewers will be delayed by 30 seconds to 6 minutes when they resume watching. It would be much better if ads played within the stream, allowing viewers to continue watching and listening while the ad runs.

One viewer said they would immediately leave a stream if an ad played while they were watching. They believe this will negatively impact streamers and make watching streams less enjoyable.
Many people found the change unusual, pointing out that viewers usually only pause streams if something is technically wrong. It remains to be seen how this will actually affect viewers in real-world use.
