Filming for the new Harry Potter TV series on HBO is progressing well, and it’s expected to premiere in early 2027.
Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter, with Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger.
Johnny Flynn will play the villain Lucius Malfoy, and Lox Pratt, known for his role in the recent Lord of the Flies adaptation, will play his son, Draco. Pratt recently revealed one way the new series will differ from the movies.
Harry Potter TV show will delve into Draco’s home life
Many fans were surprised when Johnny Flynn was chosen to play a character in the first season of the Harry Potter series, because that character doesn’t appear until the second book, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
Lox Pratt, who plays Draco in the show, has shared some clues about what’s coming up, and it reveals why and when we’ll be introduced to the Malfoy family.
Pratt explains that this new adaptation shows much more than the original books did. He notes the books primarily focused on Harry’s perspective, which was also the approach in the films. According to Pratt, the showrunner, Francesca Gardiner, and director, Mark Mylod, have discussed how the adaptation expands on the source material, offering viewers a richer experience.
The show offers glimpses into the teachers’ everyday lives and their classrooms. We also get to see Draco’s home life, and there are some really compelling scenes that reveal a lot about his character.

So, they’re really fleshing out Draco in this game! It’s not just about running into him at key story moments and seeing familiar places. They’re giving him a proper backstory and explaining why he is the way he is. It’s cool because it means he won’t just be a one-dimensional jerk; he’ll be a complex villain with actual motivations, which should make him way more interesting to play against… or maybe even understand.
Pratt thinks that element is present in the show, and explains, “Like Lord of the Flies, we had a lot of creative freedom with these characters. In the movies, Draco is often portrayed as a one-dimensional, mean-spirited villain.”
I think there’s a lot more to the story that people need to understand, and you get hints of it in the film, especially with the character Lucius. I genuinely think the series is fantastic, and I’m excited to help bring it to life.
