I’ve been hearing that one of the actors from the original Harry Potter films is getting a bit frustrated with all the questions about whether they’ll be back for HBO’s new series. It’s understandable, really – they’ve already given so much to the franchise, and it must be tiring constantly being asked about revisiting that world!
The first season, based on Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, is currently being filmed and is scheduled to premiere in 2027. The cast for HBO’s Harry Potter series is largely new, with most actors not having appeared in the original films. Warwick Davis is the only returning cast member, reprising his role as Professor Filius Flitwick. Despite this, actors from the movies are often asked about potential returns to the franchise when they’re promoting their other work.
David Thewlis recently told ScreenTime he isn’t interested in revisiting the Harry Potter universe, either as Professor Remus Lupin or any other character. He feels he’s aged out of the role of Lupin, has already spent a significant amount of time with the franchise, and is tired of discussing potential returns. However, Thewlis did mention he still appreciates Harry Potter for the joy it brings to children. You can read his full comments below.
I think I’m too old to reprise my original role now, and honestly, I have no desire to revisit that character. I’ve played them for a long time and I’m tired of discussing it.
It’s wonderful to see how much joy Harry Potter brings to children. They’re so excited and amazed by it, and it’s really rewarding to make them happy.
David Thewlis acted in five of the Harry Potter films, starting with Prisoner of Azkaban. He continued in Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince, and both Deathly Hallows movies. His character, Remus Lupin, was a key figure in Prisoner of Azkaban as the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, and he remained a supportive character within the Order of the Phoenix throughout the rest of the series. Thewlis was 41 years old when he first appeared as Lupin in 2004, and the character himself is in his thirties.
Because HBO plans to cover one Harry Potter book each season, Remus Lupin won’t appear until the third season, unless the show changes the original story. The actor chosen to play Lupin will likely be around the same age as the character was when David Thewlis played him in the early 2000s. In addition to Fionn Whitehead as Flitwick, the cast playing Hogwarts teachers and staff includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, Sirina Saba as Pomona Sprout, Bríd Brennan as Poppy Pomfrey, and Louise Brealey as Rolanda Hooch.
The new stage production of Harry Potter stars Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, and Gracie Cochrane as Ginny Weasley. Francesca Gardiner is leading the show, with Mark Mylod and David Heyman executive producing. Heyman also produced all of the Harry Potter films.
