The Western crime drama originally launched in the summer of 2025 as a one-time series. However, Netflix recognized its popularity and decided to create a second season. Production is now happening, and the show has cast a new actor to take over the role previously played by Sam O’Neill.
Eric Bana will star in the new series, which is moving to a fresh location and will feature a new cast. While it’s currently unknown if any actors from the original series will join him in Hawai’i, Tudum has announced that Shea Whigham, known for his role in American Primeval, will be taking over the role of Sam O’Neill.
In the first season, actor Joe O’Neill, known for his work in Jurassic Park, played Paul Souter, Yosemite’s head park ranger and a guide to the character Kyle Turner. However, Paul proved to be very different from what Kyle initially believed. O’Neill won’t be back for future seasons, as his character died in Season 1.
Season 2 will feature a new character played by Scott William Winters, who is as well-regarded as John O’Neill. Winters will portray Ray Burkart, a grieving father whose pursuit of justice for his son’s murder puts him at odds with Turner and the investigation.
Mark L. Smith and Elle Smith, the creators and showrunners, originally planned the series as a single, six-episode story. However, they were so impressed with the cast and the show’s potential that they began exploring ways to continue it beyond that initial plan.
This series brings Pete Whigham back together with Mark L. Smith, the creator of American Primeval. Given their previous work together and Smith’s experience with Netflix limited series, Whigham’s casting shows Untamed Productions understands how to blend well-known actors with proven talent.
Untamed Season 2 doesn’t have a release date yet.
