Cillian Murphy & Chris Evans’ $40M Sci-Fi Box Office Flop Is Finally Getting Its Deserved Redemption As A Streaming Hit 19 Years Later

A film starring Cillian Murphy and Chris Evans, originally released almost twenty years ago, is gaining popularity again in 2026. Both actors have had successful careers in movies and television since then, but a project they worked on in the late 2000s is now being discovered by a new generation of viewers.

The movie Sunshine, first released in 2007, is gaining popularity again thanks to streaming. According to FlixPatrol, it’s currently a top trending film, ranking at #2 in both Romania and Moldova.

As a film critic, I’m not usually focused on streaming numbers, but it’s interesting to see Danny Boyle’s Sunshine is really finding an audience on HBO Max. I’m hearing it’s currently the third most-watched film among subscribers in Hungary, and it’s holding strong at number four in both Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Beyond that, it’s trending as a top five title – specifically number five – across a whole swathe of countries in the Balkans, including Albania, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Slovenia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. It seems this older film is having a real moment internationally!

If you’re in the US and want to watch Sunshine, it’s available on Apple TV, but not HBO Max. The movie originally cost around $40 million to make, and only earned about $34.8 million in theaters worldwide.

Even though it didn’t do well in theaters, the movie Sunshine has been well-received by critics, earning a 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 171 reviews. Audiences also seem to enjoy it, giving it a 73% score on the site.

You can watch Sunshine, featuring Rose Byrne, Cliff Curtis, Troy Garity, Hiroyuki Sanada, Benedict Wong, and Michelle Yeoh, on HBO Max outside of the United States, and on Apple TV within the United States.
