If you’re familiar with online games like Genshin Impact and Wuthering Waves, you know that major updates, often called “point zero” updates, are crucial for their continued success.
The popular turn-based RPG Honkai: Star Rail is getting a major update, version 4.0, on February 13th. This update will introduce a brand new location for players to explore: Planarcadia, a world inspired by otaku culture.
The main character, influenced by things like anime, streaming, video games, and comics, quickly becomes famous in this new world – the entire crew of the Astral Express is even featured in a popular manga!
Although the planet has ties to the larger science fiction story – it’s the original home of Aha, a revered figure – the main story focuses on the Phantasmoon Games. These challenging games draw various groups to Planarcadia, all competing for the incredible prize: a single minute of experiencing life as a god.
If you’re unfamiliar with the backstory, the new story will be more cheerful than Amphoreus, which sometimes felt overly clever and was often too complicated.
The game looks really enjoyable to play. It will switch between classic 3D exploration and 2D side-scrolling sections, taking inspiration from games like Mega Man, Super Mario, and Sonic the Hedgehog. As you play, you’ll also gain new abilities to help you navigate these platforming challenges.
The game will feature updated combat features, and characters using the new Elation skill path will receive enhanced abilities.
This update will prominently feature Elation units, with the new characters Yao Guang and Sparxie appearing in both event banners. Sparxie is a unique character inspired by livestreaming, and her abilities reflect that.
We still don’t know much about the new character, Sparxie, but she’s designed to work well with Sparkle. This update will also improve Sparkle’s abilities, as well as those of Black Swan.
A new trading card game is coming soon, and there’s also an event where you’ll play the role of a magazine editor, creating attention-grabbing headlines to boost your publication’s audience. We’re especially excited about the magazine editor event!
The popular Currency Wars game mode is getting a major update! It will include new ways to battle, characters to play, and more content to explore. We’re also making several improvements to the game’s interface and overall experience to make things smoother and more enjoyable.
You’ll receive around 30 free pulls just by logging in, plus a free outfit for Ruan Mei and a free 5-Star character – a great set of rewards!
The new planet is the main attraction, and we’re very excited about its theme! We plan to spend about a year exploring Planarcadia, with the story being revealed through regular updates. There’s a huge amount of potential for enjoyable minigames, events, and creating new characters.
We’re really excited about some of the new art and enemy creations, including a relic set inspired by manga and an enemy that looks like a live stream.
We plan to revisit our review of Honkai: Star Rail with the newest update later this month. Keep an eye out for our updated impressions in the next few weeks.
