Most people know Oldboy as the 2003 Korean film by Park Chan-wook, or the 2013 American remake with Josh Brolin. However, the movie originally came from a 1990s Japanese manga series by Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi. Dark Horse Books is releasing a special two-volume Deluxe Edition of the manga in 2026. The first volume will be available on January 26, 2026, and the second on March 24, 2026, each costing $70. You can preorder both volumes now on Amazon.
Oldboy tells the story of Shinichi Goto, a man who is unexpectedly kidnapped and held captive in isolation for a decade. After his sudden release, he sets out to discover who imprisoned him, and his search quickly becomes a relentless pursuit of vengeance.
There are a lot of great, high-quality manga options available now. Dark Horse Comics has been reprinting popular series in deluxe editions, which are larger, printed on better paper, and have beautiful, substantial covers. You can’t go wrong with the dark fantasy world of *Berserk*, or *Vinland Saga*, a compelling story about revenge and finding peace that really makes you think about the consequences of violence. And if you enjoy *Vinland Saga*, you’ll also be happy to know that the creator’s earlier work, *Planetes* – a science fiction story about the difficulties of space exploration – has also been given the deluxe treatment.
If you’re looking for some amazing manga, I seriously recommend checking out *Vagabond*. It tells the story of Miyamoto Musashi, and the artwork is absolutely stunning – some of the best I’ve ever seen.
