Overwatch has received countless custom skin designs from fans over the years. Now, Blizzard will be incorporating some of these player-created designs into the game – but initially, only for players in China.
NetEase, the company that publishes Blizzard games in China, announced a contest inviting fans to create and submit their own designs for hero skins in Overwatch 2.
The contest asks players to imagine a world where the Omnic crisis – the major event that led to the formation of Overwatch and its heroes – never took place.
We encourage players to create original designs that don’t closely resemble existing skins. Also, please keep in mind that designs should be realistic to create as 3D models.
Voting starts on September 26th. The final designs will be chosen through a combination of judging and player votes, but the judges’ opinions will carry the most weight – 90% of the decision. The Overwatch team will have the last word, and artwork created by artificial intelligence is not allowed.
The winner will receive 20,000 Yuan (approximately $2,800 USD) and have their character skin featured in the game.
Overwatch players demand global skin design contest
Because this competition is currently limited to China, fans are hoping Blizzard will expand it to include players from around the world in the future.
One player suggested Blizzard run skin design contests, similar to Dead by Daylight’s annual events, where winning designs created by the community are included in free tiers of future battle passes. They also proposed extending these contests beyond China to include all players, potentially during the game’s anniversary.
One frustrated player complained that they feel like just a source of revenue for Blizzard, especially since many desirable items are now only available in China.
NetEase is running a fan-made skin design competition for #Overwatch2 in China! The grand prize is 20,000 Yuan, and the winning design could actually be added to the game. Please note that artwork created using AI is not allowed.

One user wondered why skin design contests weren’t open to everyone, asking, “Why limit it to just China?”
Many fans are hoping Blizzard will consider running a skin design contest, especially for players outside of China.
Needless to say, don’t expect to see any Mei Winnie-the-Pooh skins this time around.
