It was a big week for late-night television, so let’s jump right in. We’re celebrating Guillermo’s birthday and the 23rd anniversary of Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Kimmel has truly become a legend in late night, and we appreciate him sharing his thoughts with us for over 20 years. He got emotional discussing the events in Minneapolis, which isn’t unusual for him, and it’s reassuring to see that a veteran host still cares so deeply. Making jokes while the country faces serious issues could be draining, but Kimmel remains genuine and connected to his feelings, which is admirable.
George Saunders recently discussed the value of art during challenging times on The Late Show. He explained that writing as if for a very intelligent reader pushes him to think more deeply. When that reader encounters his work, it gives everyone a chance to rethink what’s true. It’s easy to feel like entertainment doesn’t matter when serious things are happening, but sometimes it can help us process events, connect with shared feelings, or simply find a bit of relief. Here’s a look at who provided that this week on late-night shows.

“Let It Fall on My Ears and Bring Me an Ounce of Joy”

The satirical news show Have I Got News for You was back this weekend, and there was plenty to discuss. A particularly interesting moment came during a conversation about Eric Swalwell calling out Republican representatives who privately criticize Donald Trump but remain silent publicly. Janice Min of The Ankler suggested Swalwell was likely just trying to boost his own profile as he runs for governor. However, Amber Ruffin offered a clever response: let him speak up. She argued, “None of those people are genuine anyway, so let him say something positive for the country. Let us at least hear it and find a little bit of happiness.” It’s a healthy way to deal with all the political posturing – grab that small moment of joy, but remember it’s just that – a small moment.

Dove Cameron’s Engagement Story on The Tonight Show

Dove Cameron is a fantastic storyteller. While she’s also a talented opera singer, what really stood out was her engagement story on The Tonight Show. I was completely captivated! We all enjoy a good love story, but Cameron’s perfectly paced and detailed retelling of her fiancé’s proposal was especially charming.

Is Ben Warheit a Misogynist Loser?

Everyone seems to enjoy the “At This Point in the Broadcast” segments, and for good reason! They’re reminiscent of classic silent films, and it’s fun to watch along and almost mouth the words with the narrator. This latest one was particularly strange, featuring a woman with a melting face, a silly homemade bomb, and witchcraft leading to a romantic kiss. It was a highlight for Late Night writer Ben Warheit, who cleverly played with the format. He initially set up a kiss with an attractive witch, then unexpectedly kissed an older man instead – essentially writing a kiss for himself. What a rascal!

Niecy Nash-Betts Is Having Sex Around the World

Niecy Nash-Betts absolutely killed it on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Her performance was confident, funny, and surprisingly open. While fans expect amazing things from her, nobody anticipated hearing about her unconventional prom experience! She shared a string of hilarious and risqué stories with Kimmel, from her travels with her wife to having three prom dates and even a playful offer to Billy Dee Williams. Beyond the laughs, she also offered Kimmel a positive outlook on life, suggesting an adult prom could be a fun experience and encouraging him to embrace life’s possibilities.

“I Think About Everything I Do”

Stephen Colbert playfully announced the date of his last Late Show episode on a rival network, a humorous jab at CBS. Before that, he had a friendly chat with fellow host Seth Meyers, who forwarded some fan mail sent to the Late Night P.O. box. Colbert shared his nervousness about embodying the persona of “Stephen Colbert.” However, the highlight of the show was when the segment Corrections humorously critiqued The Late Show, pointing out that Colbert’s “Monkey ’Mergency” segment should be more inclusive of all apes. Corrections is a fantastic online show, so it’s no surprise it’s now succeeding on television as well. This one’s for the fans – the Jackals!
