As a big Star Wars fan, I’ve been keeping up with all the Disney+ shows, but honestly, it’s been way too long since we got a proper movie! The last one, The Rise of Skywalker, came out in 2019. Thankfully, that’s about to change – I’m so excited for The Mandalorian & Grogu movie to finally hit theaters this summer. And it doesn’t stop there! We’ll get another one in 2027, starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Shawn Levy. The script is by Jonathan Tropper, who also wrote Your Friends & Neighbors, and he recently addressed a rumor that’s been going around about the film – and it seems to have put that one to rest!
Last October, rumors circulated that the upcoming film Starfighter, set five years after The Rise of Skywalker, would prominently feature Jedi. This seemed odd, as the film was expected to center on pilots and characters without Force abilities. However, in a recent interview with ScreenRant, a member of the Starfighter team, Tropper, indicated they weren’t constrained by previous Star Wars films, suggesting the Jedi rumor is likely false.
Lightsabers are definitely a key part of the Star Wars universe. I’m being very careful not to give away any spoilers, but it’s generally understood that this story doesn’t feature any characters from the previous films. You won’t see familiar faces from the other movies. We’re including elements that are recognizably Star Wars, of course, but I can’t say much more than that.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I wasn’t shocked to hear that Starfighter won’t bring back any familiar characters. The cast is completely new, and Kathleen Kennedy – before stepping down at Lucasfilm – made it clear they were aiming for a truly independent story. But what’s really interesting is what Jonathan Tropper’s hinted at – it sounds like we shouldn’t expect any Jedi or even much focus on the Force at all in this one. It’s a pretty bold direction, honestly!

If you’re hoping for Jedi powers or Force abilities in Starfighter, you’ll likely be disappointed. This movie focuses more on exciting spaceship battles and aerial combat – it’s for fans who enjoy that side of Star Wars. While the Force might be mentioned, don’t expect it to play a major role in helping Ryan Gosling’s character or anyone else in the film.
Good news for Star Wars fans hoping to see Jedi adventures return to theaters: a new trilogy is reportedly in the works! While details are still emerging, Daisy Ridley is expected to reprise her role as Rey, though likely in a supporting part. Another potential movie, which James Mangold wrote and would have explored the very beginnings of the Jedi Order 25,000 years before the original film, is currently on hold, according to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.
Ryan Gosling will star in the upcoming film Star Wars: Starfighter alongside Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Amy Adams, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, and Daniel Ings. The movie is scheduled to hit theaters on May 28, 2027.
