If you enjoy Star Trek and subscribe to Paramount+ (formerly CBS All Access), you’ve been able to watch the latest shows since Star Trek: Discovery premiered in 2017. Before that, the franchise stayed popular thanks to the movies with Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldaña, and others. There’s been a lot of talk about making another movie in that series, and Chris Pine has recently shared his thoughts on whether Star Trek 4 will actually be made.
It’s been a decade since Star Trek Beyond hit theaters, which was the last time we saw the crew of that Star Trek Enterprise. With Paramount recently being acquired by Skydance and new leadership in place, Variety asked Chris Pine at Sundance if he had any information about future Star Trek movies. Here’s what he said:
You probably know more than I do.
As a huge Star Trek fan, I know a lot of us are wondering what’s happening with the movies, and apparently, even Chris Pine is in the dark! He’s the face of those recent films, but like the rest of us, he doesn’t know what Paramount has planned. Word on the street is they were hoping to get another Star Trek movie going – a Star Trek 4 – but they’ve apparently decided to move in a different direction. So, it makes sense they haven’t been keeping Chris or the rest of the cast in the loop.

Paramount+ offers plans starting at $7.99 per month or $59.99 per year. It’s a great choice for Star Trek fans, with options including a plan with ads for $7.99/month and an ad-free premium plan for $12.99/month. You can also save money by opting for an annual subscription. View the deal to learn more.
It appears the Kelvin timeline of Star Trek will conclude with the three films already released, unless something changes. This ends a story that started with plans for Star Trek 4, which would have shown Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk meeting his father, George Kirk (played by Chris Hemsworth), who died shortly after Kirk’s birth. When asked if he had any advice for the new leaders at Paramount about the future of Star Trek, Pine responded:
Advice? Have fun, good luck, live long and prosper.
It’s been a real rollercoaster with the next Star Trek movie! On top of all the trouble getting Star Trek 4 off the ground, Paramount announced another film idea earlier this year – an “origins” story. They never really said if it would fit into the original timeline or the Kelvin timeline, but honestly, that doesn’t even matter now because that project’s been cancelled after the merger with Skydance. Now, they’re saying this new movie will finally get things back on track, and the script is being written by the team behind Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein. What’s really interesting is that it’s supposed to be a completely fresh start for Star Trek, totally separate from anything we’ve seen before in the movies or TV shows.
While the future of Star Trek movies is uncertain, the franchise is thriving on television. Season one of Starfleet Academy is currently streaming on Paramount+, and fans can also anticipate the premiere of Strange New Worlds Season 4 sometime in 2026.
