One star of The Mummy wasn’t thrilled about their most iconic scene.
One of the stars of The Mummy recently shared that they attempted to cut a popular scene from the iconic 1999 adventure film. The Mummy, starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, is widely considered a classic and fresh take on the traditional Universal horror monster story.
John Hannah, who played Jonathan Carnahan in The Mummy, wasn’t pleased with a specific scene. He told The Telegraph he disliked having to pretend to be one of the chanting zombies controlled by Imhotep, as his character does this to hide from them.
Even though the scene was meant to be funny, Hannah actually found it awkward and didn’t recognize the humor. Ironically, it turned out to be one of the strongest parts of The Mummy, receiving the most positive feedback during early test screenings. Here’s what Hannah had to say about it:
There’s a scene in The Mummy I used to really dislike. I’m running from the museum to the car, and these zombies are all chanting the villain’s name, “Imhotep.” I was supposed to act like a zombie too, groaning “Imhotep” as they walked by, then go back for the car. I honestly thought it was incredibly silly and embarrassing, and I asked the director, Steve Sommers, if we could cut it. But when we showed the movie to a test audience, that moment got the biggest laugh and everyone applauded. I completely misjudged it!
Hannah provides the humor throughout all three The Mummy films, showing up in each one to deliver jokes and funny moments. But in the first movie, his best scene might be when he chants along with a crowd of zombies – it’s both hilarious and a clever way for him to escape danger.
Even though the actor didn’t think a particular scene was Jonathan’s best, it made his character incredibly funny and memorable throughout the three movies. This highlights how much different this film was from the older, more frightening versions. By combining humor with action and adventure, The Mummy successfully updated the original classic.
Whether John Hannah will reprise his comedic role in The Mummy 4 is currently unknown. While Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are confirmed to return as Rick O’Connell and Evelyn Carnahan, John Hannah, who plays Evelyn’s brother Jonathan, hasn’t been officially announced. However, given Jonathan’s importance to the original films, many fans expect him to join them.
Despite not enjoying filming it, the chanting scene with Imhotep in The Mummy is fondly remembered for how funny it is in relation to Jonathan’s character. While the actor wasn’t a fan, it really highlights the lovable and comedic side of his performance. Hopefully, if he returns for a fourth movie, we’ll see more moments like this.
