I just finished the second season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians on Disney+, and the finale dropped on January 21st. The biggest news? We’re getting a third season! It’ll be based on The Titan’s Curse, which is exciting because it’s a story we haven’t seen adapted for the screen before. But while we wait for that, if you’re looking for something similar to watch, there are plenty of other great shows out there to keep you occupied.
The series Percy Jackson and the Olympians follows a group of young people who discover they are demigods – children of a god and a human. They train at Camp Half-Blood, and when Percy Jackson arrives and learns he may have a special destiny, it kicks off an exciting adventure.
A Series Of Unfortunate Events
The third season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians will let the creators adapt a storyline that hasn’t been shown on screen before. Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events also had this opportunity – it followed a movie starring Jim Carrey.
I was so excited when the TV show finally moved beyond the story that had already been covered in the Lemony Snicket movie! We’d all been waiting for new material, and even though it was still based on the books, it was great to finally get fresh stories and see where the series would go next.
Both A Series of Unfortunate Events and Percy Jackson center around groups of kids facing incredibly difficult challenges. While the children in Percy Jackson have magical abilities, and the Baudelaire orphans do not, both stories share a common thread: kids working together to overcome seemingly impossible obstacles.
Agatha All Along
The core of Percy Jackson and the Olympians is about kids with special abilities overcoming huge challenges. If you enjoy the show for its magic and mythological elements, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has a streaming series that offers a similar experience.
Though WandaVision is generally considered the stronger series, Agatha All Along feels more in line with the style of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. WandaVision focused on Wanda dealing with trauma and using her powers to create a better reality, while Agatha All Along takes a very different approach.
I’m really excited about this new series! It picks up with Agatha Harkness after everything that went down in WandaVision – she’s basically been living a whole new life, pretending to be someone she’s not. But things get interesting when she remembers who she really is and embarks on this journey called the Witch’s Road. And she’s not alone! This young guy, Billy Kaplan, turns out to be a seriously powerful witch and joins her along the way. It sounds like a wild ride!
Locke & Key
Both Locke & Key and Percy Jackson share a common theme: ordinary kids unexpectedly discovering they have magical abilities. In Percy Jackson, the protagonist learns he’s a demigod with powers over water. Similarly, the children in Locke & Key find out their family home contains magical keys that grant them special powers.
I recently dove into this series, and it’s seriously captivating! It’s based on a comic by Stephen King’s son, Joe Hill, and the artwork is incredible. The story centers around the Locke family, who are reeling from a terrible tragedy – their father’s murder. They end up moving into this old family home, and that’s when things get really interesting. They start finding these keys, and each one unlocks a doorway to a completely different, magical world. The best part is, the kids get to decide how they want to use them, which naturally leads to all sorts of adventures – and trouble!
A dangerous demon is trapped beneath the house and is using the youngest son, Bode, to try and break free. Thankfully, the show ran for three complete seasons with a satisfying conclusion, meaning viewers can enjoy the whole story without worrying about it being cut short.
Marvel’s Runaways
If you enjoyed Agatha All Along and Percy Jackson and the Olympians, you might also like a Hulu series from 2017. It’s not part of the Marvel universe, but it offers a similar kind of story and could be a great show to watch all at once.
In the series The Runaways, a group of teenagers makes a shocking discovery: their parents are actually supervillains who form a group called the Pride. When the Pride demands their children join them, the teens choose to run away and hide. They quickly realize they’ve inherited powers of their own and decide to fight against their parents’ evil plans.
This show feels similar to Percy Jackson, particularly in how the gods aren’t always there for their children, and Zeus is often against demigods. Like Percy Jackson, it’s a story about teenagers growing up in a dangerous world. There are three seasons, totaling 33 episodes.
His Dark Materials
The HBO series His Dark Materials is an adaptation of Philip Pullman’s novels, and it’s considered a significant improvement over a previous movie attempt. The story takes place across multiple worlds and follows Lyra, a young girl connected to a witches’ prophecy, and Will Parry, a boy who’s fled his own world.
Dafne Keen, known for her role as X-23 in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, plays Lyra in this story. Lyra lives in a world controlled by a strict authority, but she has a unique ability: she can communicate with a companion creature called a daemon. When she discovers a portal to our modern-day Earth, she uncovers a dangerous secret: a shadowy group is kidnapping children because of a mysterious substance called Dust.
The series His Dark Materials has three seasons, all of which critics enjoyed and are still entertaining to watch. Similar to Percy Jackson, the story centers on Lyra, a young teen who discovers she has a larger destiny. Both Lyra and the characters in Percy Jackson are central to a prophecy that foretells either the salvation or destruction of the world, creating a strong connection between the two stories.
Shadow And Bone
Like the popular Percy Jackson series, Shadow and Bone is a fantasy adventure perfect for young adults. Both stories feature young characters facing challenges and dangers that are far beyond their years. Shadow and Bone is based on Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse novels and is set in a completely imagined, fantastical world.
Alina discovers she possesses magical abilities and is destined to fulfill a prophecy with world-ending consequences. This puts her in the crosshairs of a powerful, alluring military leader named the Darkling (played by Ben Barnes), and she unexpectedly falls for him. Unlike stories like Percy Jackson, this is a fantasy focused on romance, where Alina’s love interest could ultimately lead to the world’s destruction.
It’s disappointing that Netflix canceled Shadow and Bone after just two seasons, but those seasons were really well done. The show was unique and stood out from the many other young adult fantasy series on the platform.
Warrior Nun
Readers who enjoyed Percy Jackson and the Olympians followed a young hero’s discovery that he was part-god, thrust into a hidden world of magic, and tasked with learning to use his abilities to protect everyone. Warrior Nun uses a similar premise, but sets it within the Catholic Church.
I was really hooked by the premise of Warrior Nun! Forget the usual stories about gods and legends – this show had a secret order of badass female warriors who actually worked for the Catholic Church. Their mission? To hunt down and destroy any demons that slipped into our world, and keep the whole thing under wraps from everyone else. It was a totally unique take on the supernatural!
I was really hooked by this show! It follows Ava, played by Alba Baptista, who unexpectedly becomes the new Warrior Nun after the previous one passed away. She has to quickly learn the ropes and stop demons from invading Earth. Sadly, the show only lasted two seasons, but the creators are making a movie to wrap up the story and give us some closure.
Fate: The Winx Saga
Similar to the story of Percy Jackson, Fate: The Winx Saga follows a group of magical teenagers as they attend Alfea to learn how to control their abilities. However, unlike Percy Jackson, which started as a book series, Fate: The Winx Saga is based on the early 2000s animated show Winx Club.
Although Winx Club was a big hit, running for eight seasons with over 200 episodes, its live-action adaptation on Netflix, Fate: The Winx Saga, didn’t fare as well. Fate: The Winx Saga only lasted two seasons and 13 episodes, and many viewers criticized the show for deviating from the original animated series.
Despite not being universally loved, the story is well-known among fans of Percy Jackson. It centers around Bloom, a fairy with the power of fire, who attends a magical boarding school and teams up with other fairies. Together, they must get ready for the resurgence of dangerous creatures called the Burned Ones.
One Piece
One Piece started as a popular manga, which then became one of the most beloved and long-running anime shows ever made. With over 1,155 episodes across 22 seasons, it can seem daunting to start watching, but Netflix now offers a great way for new fans to jump in and catch up.
In 2023, a live-action adaptation of One Piece was released, consisting of eight episodes. The show centers on Monkey D. Luffy, a young pirate captain who gained the ability to stretch after eating a Devil Fruit. He and his crew are on a quest to find the legendary One Piece treasure and for Luffy to become the Pirate King.
There are striking similarities between the characters in One Piece and Percy Jackson & the Olympians. Monkey D. Luffy is comparable to Percy Jackson, and Luffy’s crew shares many traits with Percy’s demigod companions. The second season of One Piece is scheduled to debut in March 2026, with a third season also planned.
Wednesday
Wednesday and Percy Jackson have similar themes. Like Percy, who discovers he’s a demigod—the son of Poseidon—the show features a character learning about their unique identity and powers. Both stories involve a special camp where these individuals train and learn to navigate their extraordinary abilities alongside others like them.
Wednesday Addams, known from the original Addams Family series, is sent by her family to Nevermore Academy, a school for students with special, supernatural abilities. It’s not a school for demigods, but it’s full of students who have powers – everything from sirens and werewolves to those with psychic abilities, just like Wednesday herself.
Both shows follow a similar storyline: Percy and Wednesday each discover strange happenings at their school and use their unique abilities to investigate. Wednesday has already released two seasons, with more planned.
