After years in the making, the highly anticipated series Wonder Man arrives on Disney+ this week. Starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, the show offers a unique look at Hollywood and the world of superheroes. But the story of its creation is just as interesting – the show’s creator recently revealed that Wonder Man almost faced the same cancellation as the DC film Batgirl. The series premieres this Tuesday.
During a recent interview with ComicBookMovie, the showrunner for the upcoming Disney+ series Wonder Man, Andrew Guest, explained that the show was almost cancelled due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes by writers and actors. Filming was paused, and while Marvel and Disney eventually decided to continue production in early 2024, the team had to work hard to convince the studio to let them finish the series.
We were already well into production when Disney considered ending the show, potentially as a tax write-off. But I know our producers, like Brian Winderbaum, and the entire team worked incredibly hard to ensure we could finish it, even though it was a unique and somewhat sad series. It was a really ambitious project for them.
It’s not unusual for studios to cancel projects for tax benefits, and Warner Bros. Discovery previously sparked controversy by scrapping the completed film Batgirl for this reason. Luckily, a recent Marvel series avoided a similar fate, likely due to the dedication of its creative team. Now, Wonder Man will premiere all eight episodes on January 27th, featuring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams and Sir Ben Kingsley returning as Trevor Slattery, a role he first played in the 2013 film Iron Man 3.
