Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake was canceled, so let’s upgrade 2003 game with mods

The gaming world was shaken this week by significant layoffs at Ubisoft. Sadly, this included the cancellation of the highly anticipated Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake, disappointing many fans. Luckily, the original Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time from 2003 is still readily available, and can even be updated to work well on today’s computers with the help of fan-made modifications.

Where to buy The Sands of Time

First, you’ll need to get a copy of the game. If you don’t have the physical version, you can easily buy it digitally on Steam, the Ubisoft Store, or GOG. We suggest checking the Ubisoft Store and GOG, as they both currently have the game on sale.

Improving the game

Once you’ve installed the game, run it briefly to confirm everything is working and to allow any necessary additional files, like an older version of DirectX, to install. After that, you can start adding modifications (mods). Previously, this involved downloading many separate mods, but now it’s much simpler thanks to a new package called Fix Compilation. This package includes everything you need for a smooth experience on today’s computers.

  1. support for high widescreen resolutions (the game natively supports only the 4:3 aspect ratio),
  2. full support for modern game controllers,
  3. restored EAX audio,
  4. plus a new launcher.

The game still looks quite nice, especially after applying Fix Compilation. A beautiful art style is a big part of why.

Fixes for POP: Warrior Within and POP: The Two Thrones

It’s also important to mention that customized versions of Fix Compilation were created for the next two games in the Prince of Persia series—Prince of Persia: Warrior Within and Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones.

  1. Fix Compilation for Prince of Persia: Warrior Within
  2. Fix Compilation for Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones
