Matt Reeves’ $172M Creature Feature Cloverfield That Still Needs a Sequel Is Heading to a New Streaming Home

Matt Reeves’ popular monster movie is moving to a new streaming service. While the film launched a series, a direct follow-up hasn’t been made yet.

Movie fans won’t have to wait much longer to stream the 2008 film Cloverfield. It’s coming to the platform soon, along with other popular titles like and the classic horror film directed by Wes Craven.

Directed by Matt Reeves and written by Drew Goddard, the film centers on Rob Hawkins, played by Michael Stahl-David. The story begins at Rob’s farewell party before he moves to Japan for work, but the celebration is quickly interrupted when giant monsters, known as kaiju, attack New York City, throwing everything into chaos.

In addition to Stahl-David, the movie Cloverfield stars Odette Yustman as Beth, Rob’s girlfriend, Mike Vogel as Rob’s brother Jason, Jessica Lucas as Jason’s fiancée Lily, and Ben Feldman as Beth’s friend Travis. The film also includes appearances by Billy Brown, Kelvin Yu, Theo Rossi, Lizzy Caplan, and T.J. Miller.

After a huge online marketing push, Cloverfield quickly became a box office hit when it came out in theaters. It broke records for January releases, earning $40.1 million in its opening weekend. By the end of its initial run in cinemas, Cloverfield had made over $172.4 million, which was a significant return on its $30 million budget.

The film received over 30 nominations from prestigious industry awards and won five, including the Saturn Award for Best Science Fiction Film and the Fangoria Chainsaw Award for Best Score, which was composed by Academy Award winner Michael Giacchino. Currently, Cloverfield has a “Certified Fresh” rating of 78% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on over 200 critic reviews.

The Cloverfield Franchise After the Original Film — Explained

After the first Cloverfield movie did well, a sequel was quickly discussed. However, the follow-up that audiences got wasn’t what they anticipated. In 2016, director Dan Trachtenberg released 10 Cloverfield Lane, a suspenseful sci-fi thriller. Interestingly, the film was originally made as an independent movie before being reimagined as a connection to the original Cloverfield.

Similar to its predecessor, 10 Cloverfield Lane was a big hit, earning over $110 million despite only costing $15 million to make. Critics and viewers both loved the movie, especially the acting by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman, and John Gallagher Jr.

In 2018, a third installment in the Cloverfield series, titled The Cloverfield Paradox, was released much like the first film. Directed by Julius Onah and written by Oren Uziel (originally titled God Particle), the movie stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Ava Hamilton, a communications officer. Most of the film’s action takes place on the Cloverfield space station.

Released in 2028, The Cloverfield Paradox centers around the crew of the Cloverfield space station as they try to fix Earth’s energy problems with a powerful particle accelerator. However, their experiments go terribly wrong, leading to dangerous and deadly results for the team, which includes Commander Kiel (David Oyelowo), Ernst Schmidt (Daniel Brühl), Volkov (Aksel Hennie), Mina (Elizabeth Debicki), and Tam (Zhang Ziyi).

The latest installment in the series received mostly negative reviews. Currently, Rotten Tomatoes gives The Cloverfield Paradox a score of just 22%, based on over 150 critic reviews.

I remember reading back in March 2025 that director is working on a sequel to their 2008 film! When asked about it, Anvari said they couldn’t reveal much – the whole team is being super tight-lipped, which they get – but hinted we’re in for something really special. It’s exciting to think about!

Cloverfield will be available for streaming on Paramount+ beginning on Feb. 1.
