How Alex Honnold’s Wife Felt Watching Him Scale A Nearly 1700 Foot Skyscraper Live On Netflix

Alex Honnold is famous for completing incredibly daring climbs. The experienced rock climber has scaled huge natural cliffs and buildings, and his solo climbs without ropes are now legendary. This weekend, he added another impressive feat: he climbed a massive building in Taiwan as part of a livestreamed event for Netflix subscribers. Afterwards, his wife shared how she felt about his accomplishment.

Alex Honnold’s recent climb, featured in the Netflix documentary Skyscraper Live, involved scaling the Taipei 101, a massive 1,667-foot building. Even though I don’t know Honnold personally, watching him climb was incredibly nerve-wracking, like watching someone I cared about. It’s easy to imagine how anxious his wife, Sanni McCandless, must have been as he climbed. She shared her feelings during the documentary, and they were completely relatable.

I’m just trying to stay calm and be in the moment. I’m breezy.

Watching Alex Honnold’s climb, I couldn’t help but focus on his wife, Sanni McCandless. It’s totally understandable that she’d be a little anxious with her husband taking on such a dangerous feat – they share two daughters, after all! Throughout the whole climb, I noticed her waving to him from below, which was sweet. It’s hard to know exactly what she was feeling internally, but if she was worried, she hid it remarkably well when she spoke to the cameras. She seemed incredibly composed, which I really admired.

During the event, McCandless also spoke about her husband’s mindset, after joining him on the roof once he completed his challenge.

He seems incredibly excited. The weather is perfect, the atmosphere is fantastic, and he’s enjoying doing what he’s passionate about.

This, of course, isn’t Alex Honnold’s first rodeo. After all, he is the first person to ever free solo an entire route on Yosemite National Park’s El Capitan. I’ve seen Tom Cruise hang from a tall building for a movie, and that was certainly impressive. Without showing disrespect to Cruise, though, I’d argue that what Honnold has accomplished is on a whole other level. It seems I’m not the only one who’s impressed either, as Kim Kardashian watched the event with a group and, based on her IG story, they were freaking out once Honnold finished:

Alex Honnold gained widespread recognition after his climbs in Yosemite, and people have been closely following his adventures ever since – likely a key reason Netflix decided to broadcast his live sporting events. The 2018 documentary Free Solo offered viewers a detailed look into Honnold’s career and approach to climbing, earning critical praise and an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. More recently, he appeared in the docuseries Arctic Ascent and a viral rock climbing video with Jared Leto.

Now that Alex Honnold has climbed the Taipei 101 in just over an hour and a half, everyone is wondering what challenge he’ll take on next. It’s hard to believe he could outdo that climb, but people probably felt the same way before he even attempted it! No matter what he decides, you can be sure his wife will be there to support him.
