Ralph Fiennes may have just revealed who is playing Voldemort in HBO’s Harry Potter series

Ralph Fiennes might have let slip that Cillian Murphy will be playing Lord Voldemort in the new Harry Potter TV series on HBO.

During a January 2026 red-carpet interview, Ralph Fiennes – best known for playing Voldemort in the original Harry Potter movies – hinted that HBO had already chosen an actor to take over the role in their planned reboot. When asked who he thought should play Voldemort, he didn’t offer a suggestion, but implied a decision was already made.

Fiennes mentioned he heard the roles have already been filled. He praised Cillian Murphy, calling him an excellent choice, and indicated he believes the cast is already set.

When reporters asked him to explain further, Fiennes appeared to understand the impact of his words. He quickly tried to take them back, stumbling over his words and saying he “thought they had,” before playfully admitting to an interviewer, “You got me!”

Fiennes’ comments clash with Murphy’s previous denial

Murphy’s recent comments quickly sparked rumors that he was chosen to play the famous villain, but they contradicted what he said only a few months prior. Back in late 2025, he appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast and stated he wasn’t involved in the project.

I remember when Cillian Murphy was asked about potentially playing Voldemort, and he genuinely seemed surprised! He said he hadn’t heard anything about it and even joked that it would be tough to follow Ralph Fiennes’ performance – everyone thought that meant the rumors were totally false. So it’s really shocking to hear Ralph talking about it now – it completely throws everything we thought we knew for a loop!

HBO hasn’t announced who will play Voldemort in its upcoming Harry Potter series, which is scheduled to premiere in 2027. Although news has surfaced about casting for other major characters, the network is keeping tight-lipped about who will play the series’ main villain.
