James Gunn, the head of DC Studios, recently shared his positive thoughts on Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine. The film proved to be a major success in 2024, especially considering the already strong performance of Marvel’s Phase 5 movies. Given Gunn’s background with Marvel and his love for superhero films, fans were eager to hear his opinion.
James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, recently shared his opinion on Marvel’s upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine while promoting his film Superman. During an appearance on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, Shepard asked Gunn to name some of the best superhero movies ever made. After mentioning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Superman: The Movie, and Iron Man, Shepard steered the conversation towards the Deadpool films. Gunn responded that he enjoyed all three, and described Deadpool & Wolverine as “very messy… But so freaking funny:”
Shepard: “I wanted to know, what do you think are the greatest superhero movies made?
According to Gunn, the best superhero movies are ‘Into the Spider-Verse,’ the original ‘Superman’ directed by Richard Donner, and ‘Iron Man.’ He particularly emphasizes ‘Iron Man’ as a standout, though he feels like he’s missing another favorite.
Shepard: “What about… what’s the naughty ones I love… Ryan Reynolds…”
Gunn: “Deadpool.”
Shepard: “The first Deadpool.”
Gunn: “I actually love all three of them. They’re all really good.”
Shepard: “The last one was like impossibly good. I was like, ‘My god, this is f***ing cool.'”
Gunn: “Very messy… But so freaking funny. Yeah, I love those. I love those.”

Released almost two years after James Gunn became co-CEO of DC Studios, Deadpool & Wolverine was Marvel’s first R-rated film. The movie proved to be a major hit, bringing back beloved Marvel characters and earning fantastic reviews. It made $1.3 billion worldwide, becoming both the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever and the second-highest-grossing film of 2024, surpassed only by Inside Out 2.
James Gunn is busy building a new DC Universe for film and television. It started with the recent release of Superman, which he wrote and directed, and continued with Creature Commandos on HBO Max in December 2024. More projects are planned for this year, including Supergirl in June, Lanterns later in the summer, and Clayface in September.
James Gunn’s Previous Thoughts on Marvel/DC Movies

James Gunn has been deeply involved with superhero films since 2014, working closely with both Marvel and DC. Because of this extensive experience, the co-CEO of DC Studios has shared many thoughts on the genre.
Recently, James Gunn discussed scenes he believes shouldn’t be revisited in future movies, drawing from both Marvel and DC storylines. He specifically mentioned iconic moments like the death of Bruce Wayne’s parents and Superman’s arrival on Earth as an infant, as well as the spider bite that gave Peter Parker his superpowers.
Discussing the crowded summer movie schedule of July 2025, James Gunn addressed the perceived competition between Marvel and DC. With DC’s Superman releasing just two weeks before Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Gunn emphasized, “There’s room for us both,” and expressed a desire to highlight the positive aspects of both films and companies.
Even though James Gunn isn’t as active online as before, fans will still be eager to hear his thoughts on superhero movies. As the head of DC Studios, likely for many years, his perspective will continue to add depth and complexity to discussions about these films.
