A fantastic but often overlooked movie is coming to Paramount+ soon, and fans don’t have long to wait! The director is famous for his horror films, and before he revolutionized slasher movies with Scream, he made a funny and spooky vampire film.
The 1995 movie Vampire in Brooklyn is now available to stream on Paramount+. The Eddie Murphy film will join other popular titles like Run and Us on the platform starting February 1st.
Wes Craven directs this film, written with help from Chris Parker, Michael Lucker, and the late Charles Q. Murphy. The story follows NYPD Detective Rita Veder as she investigates a shocking and mysterious mass murder at a shipyard. Her investigation leads her to Max (also known as Maximillian), a charismatic vampire played by Eddie Murphy, who is responsible for the killings.
In addition to Eddie Murphy and Angela Bassett, Vampire in Brooklyn features Allen Payne as NYPD Detective Justice, Kateem Hardison as Julius, a man unknowingly controlled by the vampire Maximillian, and the late John Witherspoon as ship inspector Silas Green. The film also includes appearances by John LaMotta, Ray Combs, W. Earl Brown, Zakes Mokae, Simbi Khali, and Joanna Cassidy.
Let me tell you, when Vampire in Brooklyn hit theaters in 1995, critics were not impressed. It really bombed with reviewers, and as of today, it’s sitting at a dismal 14% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 36 reviews. It’s… not a beloved film, to put it mildly.
Despite the negative reviews, Vampire in Brooklyn was a financial success, earning over $35 million at the box office on a $14 million budget. It also received a surprisingly decent audience score of 31% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on over 50,000 user reviews, though it still wasn’t considered a critically acclaimed film.
What’s Next for the Stars of Vampire in Brooklyn?
Angela Bassett’s fans are excited about her next film role! She’s joined the voice cast of Wildwood, an animated movie directed by Travis Knight and written by Chris Butler. Coming to theaters on October 23rd, the film tells the story of two young students who venture into a magical forest near Portland. They’re on a mission to rescue their baby sibling from a flock of crows and a mysterious woman who controls them.
Eddie Murphy is returning to movies with a new take on a classic role. He announced in July 2025 that he would be playing Inspector Clouseau in a new Pink Panther film.
When questioned about whether his character, Clouseau, would remain French, Murphy responded that he absolutely had to be, but also suggested he could be Haitian. He firmly stated, “He’s Black, for sure.” Murphy also discussed how his roles have changed over time, noting that he’s typically played rebellious young characters, but now he often portrays the more mature, sensible voice. He joked that getting older means facing consequences, saying, “If you try to take someone on when you’re our age, you end up hurting yourself too.”
Vampire in Brooklyn will be available for streaming on Paramount+ beginning Feb. 1.
