Most viewers weren’t happy with the final season of Game of Thrones, but the ending for one character stands out as a rare success – and it probably won’t happen in the books. Despite the show’s popularity, the season 8 finale was very controversial, and didn’t deliver what fans expected. A common criticism is that the characters’ arcs were rushed or ignored, except for one notable exception.
Sansa Stark experienced the most compelling transformation in HBO’s Game of Thrones. She began as a somewhat spoiled and innocent young woman who longed for a fairytale life, but ultimately became a shrewd and capable Queen of the North. Many viewers hoped for this kind of ending for characters like Daenerys and Jon, and Sansa’s journey delivered on that expectation. Surprisingly, this well-received storyline is one of the least likely to appear in the original Game of Thrones books.
Sansa’s Book Story Is Headed In A Completely Different Direction
George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series isn’t finished yet – there are still two books to come, and fans have been eagerly awaiting Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring for years. While Martin reportedly shared the broad strokes of the ending with the creators of the Game of Thrones TV show, it’s unclear which parts of that ending will actually appear in the books, or even if those final books will ever be published. Despite this uncertainty, we can probably predict some character arcs that won’t happen in the official story.
Sansa Stark’s fate is one of the biggest differences between the show and the books. While many fans would love to see her become Queen in the North, the events in the books don’t set her up for that. In George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, Sansa is considerably younger than she was on screen. Crucially, her traumatic marriage to Ramsay Bolton – which was vital to her growth and return to Winterfell – can’t happen as depicted in the show. This is because Ramsay is already married to someone pretending to be Arya Stark.
In the Song of Ice and Fire series, Sansa Stark is currently hiding in the Vale of Arryn, posing as Petyr Baelish’s illegitimate daughter. Even after Lysa Arryn’s death, she remains quiet and follows instructions, although she doesn’t fully trust Littlefinger, given his past actions. Sansa is beginning to learn about politics, but she’s still very young. Without the experiences and hardships seen in the Game of Thrones TV show, her story will likely have a much different conclusion.
Could Sansa Still Become Queen Of The North In A Dream Of Spring?
What makes Sansa’s ending in Game of Thrones so satisfying isn’t just that she becomes Queen in the North, but how she gets there. The show emphasizes that her strength and leadership come from everything she endured and learned. While she probably won’t rule the North entirely on her own, it’s likely she’ll eventually return to Winterfell and play an important role there.
In George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, a mysterious figure called the Ghost of High Hill—thought to be one of the ancient Children of the Forest—prophesies that Sansa Stark will kill “a savage giant in a castle built of snow.” This likely refers to Winterfell, though the identity of the ‘giant’ remains unknown. Jon Snow also mentions in the books that Winterfell rightfully belongs to Sansa, envisioning her as a lady of the castle, not a queen. These clues strongly hint that Winterfell will ultimately be Sansa’s home.
The prediction about Sansa could simply refer to her time in the Vale, specifically when she confronted Robin for ruining her snow replica of Winterfell. While this might be a disappointing explanation for the Ghost of High Hill’s dream, George R.R. Martin is known for using misleading prophecies. Sansa might return to Winterfell eventually, but the strong, decisive character we saw in Game of Thrones is likely a thing of the past.
