It’s another gripping show about a plane hijacking, but with a really cool sci-fi element. It’s funny how often hijackings show up as the starting point for a thrilling story, isn’t it?
With all the actors in one spot, constant action, surprising reveals in everyday conversations, and minimal location costs, it’s a dream for producers and creative teams. The recent season of Hijack proves how compelling a strong storyline can be, but Netflix’s Into the Night demonstrated this potential years earlier.
Into The Night Is A Science Fiction Apocalyptic Hijack TV Show Set On A Plane
Into the Night is a science fiction drama series from Belgium that first appeared on Netflix in May 2020, and a second season was released in 2021. The show is based on the 2015 novel The Old Axolotl by Polish author Jacek Dukaj, and it’s considered one of the best sci-fi series available on Netflix.
The story opens with a group of travelers on a late-night flight from Brussels. Shortly after takeoff, Terenzio, a NATO officer played by Stefano Cassetti, seizes control of the plane and demands an immediate departure. His urgent warnings about the dangers of sunlight soon prove to be true.
Okay, so imagine this: suddenly, just any sunlight kills you. It’s terrifying! The story follows people on a plane desperately trying to outrun the sunrise, heading west to stay in the dark. They’re making these risky landings for fuel as everything on the ground just completely falls apart. Season two, which is the last one, mostly takes place inside a bunker they discovered way back in season one – it’s where they’re trying to ride things out.
Hijack And Into The Night Both Feature Unusual Hijackings
Both Hijack and Into the Night present hijacking scenarios that differ from typical real-life events. The first season of Hijack notably features a business negotiation expert – played by Idris Elba as Sam Nelson – among the passengers. The storyline for season 2 is even more unexpected.
Okay, so in season two, things get really interesting. Sam’s on a train, but this time, he’s actually the one taking it over! You don’t see that often – a show or movie where you’re rooting for the hijacker, right? But honestly, with the sun about to fry us all, this guy actually has a pretty good reason to be in charge. It’s a desperate situation, and it makes for a wild ride!
While both shows feature a hijacking, the Netflix series uses it as a way to reach the main story’s conclusion, not as the central focus. If you’re looking for a show about a hijacking, check out Hijack. If you prefer a hijacking to be just one piece of a larger story, Into the Night is the better choice.
