2026 promises to be a huge year for movies, with a wide range of films in the works – from smaller independent projects to massive blockbusters and adaptations of well-loved stories from comics, books, and video games. A particularly exciting part of the 2026 lineup is the number of highly anticipated sequels.
In 2026, audiences can look forward to sequels of several blockbuster movies, including continuations of popular comedies and superhero films, as well as stories that explore the origins of existing franchises. These films are expected to be commercially successful and, with strong execution, could also earn high praise from both critics and viewers.
Scary Movie 6
A few years back, news of another Scary Movie wouldn’t have generated much excitement. While the series had a strong start, the later films weren’t as good. Eventually, the original actors and filmmakers moved on, and Scary Movie 5 received very negative reviews.
Okay, so this series has been off the air for over ten years, but I’m already feeling optimistic – and for good reason! The original creative team is largely reuniting. I’m thrilled to say the Wayans Brothers are back, both writing and appearing on screen, and fan favorites like Anna Faris and Regina Hall are returning to deliver the laughs again. It feels like coming home!
Plus, some original cast members from the first two Scary Movie films, including Cheri Oteri, Chris Elliott, and Jon Abrahams, are returning. New cast members like Heidi Gardner and Damon Wayans Jr. are joining the fun. Get ready for some early-2000s-style laughs when Scary Movie 6 hits theaters on June 12.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
The first Super Mario Bros. Movie was a huge success, earning over $1 billion and quickly becoming a popular choice for family movie nights. Now, three years later, the sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, arrives in theaters on April 3rd.
The new movie appears to build on everything people loved about the original. It features the same animation style, brings back the familiar characters and actors, and promises another enjoyable experience for families.
The new Super Mario Galaxy movie is based on the 2007 video game of the same name, where Mario goes on a space adventure – promising some stunning scenes. Brie Larson will play Rosalina, and Benny Safdie will be the voice of Bowser Jr.
Ready Or Not 2: Here I Come
The directing duo Radio Silence—Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett—have become some of the most exciting and talented horror filmmakers currently working. Although their films Scream VI and Abigail were both well-received, many consider their 2019 movie Ready or Not to be their best work.
The original movie didn’t seem like a candidate for a sequel, but one is coming out on March 27th and the trailer looks great. The first film follows Grace, who quickly discovers her new husband’s family is trying to kill her as part of a dark, satanic ritual on their wedding night. She fights back and ultimately survives, with the family not being so lucky.
The world’s richest and most powerful people are threatened by her survival – they used similar methods to gain their influence and now want to eliminate her, along with her sister, Faith. Samara Weaving and Kathryn Newton are a fantastic pair as the leads, and the cast of villains features stars like Sarah Michelle Gellar and Elijah Wood.
Toy Story 5
We’re looking forward to Toy Story 5, but also a little worried. The first three movies are considered one of the best trilogies ever made, and Toy Story 3 provided a truly satisfying conclusion. Toy Story 4 was a big success, earning over a billion dollars, but many felt it wasn’t really needed.
While Toy Story 4 provided a satisfying conclusion that could have ended the series, Pixar is continuing the story with Toy Story 5 on June 19th. This new film explores what happens when Bonnie becomes engrossed in her tablet, leading to the toys feeling neglected and left behind.
The idea behind this new movie is really promising, particularly because kids are so focused on technology these days. It’s a bit surprising to see Woody return after the events of Toy Story 4, and that will need to be addressed in the story. However, this series has never disappointed us before, so we’re confident it will be another excellent film.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping
It’s been wonderful to see Suzanne Collins expand the world of The Hunger Games recently. After the original three books and four movies, many thought the story was complete, but her prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, was another success.
Suzanne Collins has released a new book, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, and it’s been getting fantastic reviews. A movie version is coming out on November 20th. This story is a prequel, meaning it takes place before the original Hunger Games trilogy, and it focuses on the 50th Hunger Games, which were won by Haymitch Abernathy – the same Haymitch who later mentored Katniss and Peeta.
The story is fantastic, and longtime fans will appreciate the many references to the original series, especially the perfect casting of Elle Fanning as a young Effie Trinket. The entire cast is excellent, featuring strong performances from Joseph Zada, McKenna Grace, Ralph Fiennes, and Kieran Culkin.
The Devil Wears Prada 2
As a huge movie fan, I always get a little nervous when they try to revisit a classic, and The Devil Wears Prada is definitely a classic! It’s one of those films from the 2000s that people still adore and quote constantly, even after all these years. But I’m excited because The Devil Wears Prada 2 is coming out on May 1st, and everything I’ve heard so far sounds really promising.
This isn’t just a quick attempt to capitalize on the success of the first movie. Like its predecessor, this sequel is adapted from a novel, giving it a strong foundation. Even better, most of the original stars – including Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci – are back for this installment.
The sequel to The Devil Wears Prada will reunite the original film’s director, David Frankel, and writer, Aline Brosh McKenna. Combined with how fondly the original cast remembers the first movie, it seems this sequel is being made by a talented and well-respected team.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day
This will be the first time an actor has played Spider-Man in four separate solo movies. While Tom Holland’s three Spider-Man films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe were fantastic, fans haven’t seen the character since Spider-Man: No Way Home came out in 2021.
Things are changing on July 31st with the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. This movie is the first time we’ll see Spider-Man after everyone around him lost their memories of him, essentially giving the character a clean slate. However, his longtime friends Ned and MJ will be back in the film.
The new Spider-Man movie, Brand New Day, will include appearances by Jon Bernthal as the Punisher and Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, and welcomes Sadie Sink from Stranger Things to the cast. Details about the plot are scarce, but considering the series’ track record, fans have high expectations.
Godzilla Minus Zero
As a huge film fan, I was completely blown away by Godzilla Minus One last year! It really came out of left field and quickly became a global phenomenon. The story is set in Japan right after the war, and it centers around a former pilot who flew kamikaze missions and is struggling with trauma. His life gets turned upside down when he comes face-to-face with Godzilla.
The film received widespread praise and is often considered the best Godzilla movie made in recent years. Remarkably, it won an Academy Award for its visual effects despite having a lower budget than most films that receive the honor. The franchise will continue with the release of Godzilla Minus One on November 3rd.
Details about Godzilla Minus Zero are currently limited. We know it follows the 2023 Godzilla Minus One film and is intended to be a significant and impactful movie, but the cast and story remain a secret for now.
Avengers: Doomsday
Many fans feel the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t been consistently great since Avengers: Endgame. Even the movies acknowledge this, as seen in Deadpool & Wolverine where they joke about joining the MCU at a difficult time. There’s optimism that Avengers: Doomsday, releasing December 18th, will improve things.
The latest Avengers movie, titled Doomsday, features a significant shift in the series. While many familiar actors won’t be returning, Robert Downey Jr. takes on the role of the villain Doctor Doom. The film also introduces new heroes, including the Fantastic Four, the Thunderbolts, and characters from the X-Men, previously featured in Fox’s films.
As a huge movie fan, I’m already getting so hyped for Avengers: Doomsday! We haven’t seen much yet – just a few glimpses, and the awesome news that Chris Evans is returning as Captain America – but the anticipation is definitely building. I’m really curious to see how they’re going to juggle so many characters, especially bringing together heroes who haven’t really shared the screen before. It’s going to be a challenge, but I have high hopes!
Dune: Part Three
Let me tell you, December 18th, 2026 is shaping up to be huge for movie fans. Not only are we finally getting Avengers: Doomsday, but Denis Villeneuve is delivering Dune: Part Three! Everyone thought Frank Herbert’s novel was impossible to adapt, but Villeneuve already gave us two Best Picture nominees with the first two Dune films, and I’m incredibly excited to see how he finishes the story.
A third movie is coming, this time based on the 1969 novel Dune Messiah. It continues the story with Paul Atreides now ruling as Emperor, and the plot promises to be surprising – just like the book, which defied what fans expected. The film will likely do the same.
The popular actors Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh, and Rebecca Ferguson are returning for the next installment. They’ll be joined by Jason Momoa, despite his character’s death in the previous film, and Anya Taylor-Joy, who had a brief appearance in the second movie. Robert Pattinson is also now part of the cast.
